My first Fender I bought in 1989. I was 15-16 years old.

It was a Fender HM I believe. It was a strat body with a black headstock, no pickguard, 2 single coils and bridge humbucker, floyd rose trem. It was POS big time!!! I swore I'd never buy another. I got turned on to the American Made Washburn's back then and really liked them until they "cheapened" up. In 2002 I picked up a CII Squier strat which turned out to be a pretty good guitar. 2003 I picked up a MIM tele, then last year I picked up a MIA tele. My Squier strat still sees the most action though.

Strat

A beautiful black 1990 Strat Plus with gold lace sensor pickups and a maple neck. Sweet guitar but I'm forever ruined by my Teles!

My first 'real' Fender was a 1986 MIM Strat in Olympic white. Though it looked a whole lot like a 62RI I never bonded and sold it.
Recently I got a 97 MIM Jimmie Vaugh in Oly white and love it. I'm determined to get one in every color I love it so much.

It was a red Mustang, circa 1966, follwed by a red Corronado II, in 1968, and
a blone 1970 Tele (that I still have).

Mine was a Black 1978 Musicmaster, with a rosewood fingerboard, which I got in 1983 for £95.
I totally customised it, routed out and put a Bill Lawrence in the bridge postion, sprayed it bright orange, and gigged it solid. I also used to lend it to a then up and coming band called Wedding Present who not only went on to greater things, but also bought my guitar off me. I wonder where that guitar is now? It had a lovely neck and was a wonderful punky/indie thing.
I then went on to using other makers guitars, as in the mid-late 80s, Fender had some serious competition from others, at better prices IMO, eg Ibanez, Aria, Westone etc.
Ive always wanted to get another Musicmaster, but to be honest the prices that they now go for, for what was a plywood bodied cheapy at the time, puts me off. For the cost of an old Bronco, you can get a new Fender Tele!
To compensate, I got hold of myself a Fender Bullet for a good price, which has a similar vibe, and recalls the guitars of my youthful punky days. It seemed everyone I knew at the time played either Musicmasters, Broncos, Bullets, and 70s Tele Customs and Deluxes at that time. They were all the ultimate cheap indie guitar back then, everyone hotrodded, customised, painted and thrashed them, and you could still say you owned a Fender.

Nostalgia;- It ain't what it used to be!!!

My first tele was a 1973 with a maple board in walnut finish, black 3 ply guard.

I bought the guitar on layaway. I was working via my high school work study program. (Go to classes in the AM and to a job in the PM)

When I had earned enough money to get the guitar, I quit the job.

The thing that you can do when you're young.

I think that I still have the registration card for that guitar. At that time Fender was using a card that looked similar to a credit card. It was plastic and had the guitar's info typed on it. There was even a place where you were to sign your name.

I traded that guitar for a candy apple red strat.

For me, it was a new '83 telecaster toploader in black. I later sold it for a '66 Mustang, then got a new '95 MIA strat, then back to a tele. The only Fenders I now own are telecasters. I have two.

'91 Strat Plus

This is an interesting thread. My first Fender was also the first really nice guitar I bought, a '91 Strat Plus, Midnight Wine with RW neck, which I doubt I'll ever sell. I got this guitar from a music store that was closing, everything was 1/2 off, I had a friend holding a Jeff Beck sig strat and an SG std, played all 3 and made a choice, I probably would have prefered the JB, but it was a fruity lavender color.

First was an '83 sunburst Strat. Then came my SQ Tele. Still have 'em both.

In 1994 a 1993 American Standard Stratocaster. I still have this guitar today, but have trouble with the 9.5 radius and medium jumbo frets. Plus the guitar is trashed from over playing it.

I was 12 years old and it was my prized possession. I was at the age when kids were starting to pickup guitars and I had already been playing for a year at that point so I was the cool kid. I knew more about guitars and I had a real Stratocaster. I was extremely lucky my parents bought me that. Four years later I'd by my first Telecaster.

My first Fender was a Telecaster that I bought virtually brand new in 1968 when I had been playing guitar for only a few months. I got it from my brother's friend for the unbelievable price of $75! I still have and play this guitar today. Though I tend to favor strats, the Tele is an old friend that will never leave me.

In 1985 or 86 I bought a 69 Tele in natural finish (may have been stripped to that, was rough) with a silver face Twin reverb from a local kid's uncle for $350.00. I was 16 years old and I remember the reason he was selling it was "coke problem", according to his nephew. Very sad. I miss that guitar a lot but I bet he missed it more. He bought it new.

As a side note, I ended up trading the guitar 2 years later for a Gibson 345. That guitar fell off the stage and the neck broke. I bought a Les Paul after that and it got stolen out of our rehearsal space. I eventually got the message and stuck to Fenders.
