When people start rattling off music history, facts, dates, what category and subcategory everything "belongs" in,.... It always makes me think of Cliff Calvin. :D

    Example: The Police are "punk"?
    Yeah,...no. they're just the Police.
They made some great music too.

The Pistols were a manufactured band designed to sell ripped trousers.

The last time i saw live music indoors had hardcore punk, and the bass player from dropdead runs a record store within walking distance.

Chaos UK unfortunately did develop, and they got kinda corny.

A bunch of punk and hardcore bands did develop, but into bad metal bands, and tend not to play that material anymore when they play shows.

Oi! Was not just for racist skinheads. What about the Angelic Upstarts?

You don’t exactly need to dig very deep to find underground punk rock.

There are other dances besides the pogo, and how is that not dancing?

Like you can’t dance to the dead Kennedys.

Punk, oi!. And hardcore are forms of folk music. A lot of the lefty folk music was made to sustain people in those struggles. People still sing Joe Hill songs on picket lines to this day.

The Sex Pistols were a boy band who were peripheral at best to punk rock and who are pretty irrelevant in 2021. Discharge were way more influential.

Taxonomy makes talking about music way easier if you realize that it’s a tool and not a boundary.

What was wrong is the same flaw with other genres - the de-evolution (see what I did there? And yes, Devo is punk as hell) from inspiration to formulation. My favorite “punk” bands - The Clash and X - both quickly transcended the punk label. (And for me, the counterpoint of Joe’s tele and Mick’s LP is sonic beauty.)

What was wrong with punk? Well... a lot. But to stay positive, I’ll throw in what was right. Even at 15/16 in the mid seventies my garage band knew we were better than
most/all punk bands... they boosted our ego by being so sloppy, ill trained and all-around sub-standard in every way. Take a bath.

What do you have against a mosh pit? :p

I played in a fairly successful Punk band for almost 10 years, I'll be the first to admit that it retarded my learning of guitar, But I played shows with just about every major punk band you could think of, (Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, Minor Threat, Raw Power etc...

Shows that were way larger than my talent level could have ever hoped for.... The group that we piggy-backed off of for years (7 Seconds) Just hung it up a few years ago (after nearly 40 years)

They had several guitarists through the years, but the longest tenured... Was my buddy (and the other guitarist in my band) Bobby Adams.

My God, I didn't realize it at the time, but growing up in Reno during the 80's and 90's... Was a fricking awesome ride!!!

The good thing about Punk was that it made lots of people realize that THEY could form bands and start playing.

They didn't necessarily play Punk, but Punk pushed them into making music.

The Sex Pistols were nothing more than Malcolm McLaren's Monkees. Their 15 minutes achieved nothing and changed nothing.

Punk only highlighted the talents of late 70's New Wave bands like The Police, The Pretenders, The Jam, Blondie, The Cars, Elvis Costello (Bowie) et al.
