Jr High, I guess it would’ve been around 1977, we called ourselves Nemesis. We played the school talent show. The bass player and I went on to become music teachers, the keyboard player is a really good jazz pianist, but has a career in finance, the other guitarist lives in CA and we still keep in touch, I have no idea what became of the drummer.

67 or 68 in a Junior High school "talent show"... Gabe Sanchez and the Rolling Tamales ... (Gabe's idea and he was the singer)
Other Jr High and Freshman year bands I was in were The Blades of Grass and The Bright Lights, it was all pretty dismal kid band stuff.

It wasn't a real band, but we occasionally did some songs for which we'r called ourselves:

    We Are the Friend

I saw it on a friend's pencil case. It was part of a longer set of phrases that were obviously translated into English from some language by someone who didn't know how to translate into English very well. I thought it was funny and kind of mysterious, but in the end was more hassle than it was worth, since people would always ask me what it meant and I honestly had no idea!

The Hummeroids. Yeah, I know. But we did win the local high school talent show and the keyboard player went on to play with Dave Matthews. Still, not exactly a name you tell your kids about...

Not counting playing with my cousins for the family gathering at Christmas, the first band I was in was called Altus, because that's Latin for "high". That was in high school in something like 1983. I didn't name it; they already had that name when I joined.

The first band that I participated in naming, during college, was Marty and the Mammals. Marty was a very popular guy and our lead singer, so we were keen to put his name in the name of the band to leverage his social capital. I remember going through the "M" section of the dictionary looking for alliterative words. The runner-up was "Marty and the Mints".
