What time do you eat thanksgiving dinner? why eat so early?

Just seems early to me, this is on my fathers side, I asked him why they do it that way, he just says he doesn’t know they’ve always eaten early

We will be eating at 2:30pm today. My family has done it that way for at least 60 years I can remember. Then you lay around moaning of how good it was and how full you are until 6ish and then start warming up leftovers or eating a stuffing sammie. Just starting a fire in the FP and will be watching movies with favorite beverages.
Eating twice is one thing. But growing up in NY we had a huge turnout every year (16-20) and I think eating earlier gave family a chance to get home at a decent hour after dinner. Some drove an hour or more to get home.

That 2pm nonsense combined with the amino acids in turkey that put folks to sleep?
Probably a strategy to get them to leave before sunset!

My ex always did the early afternoon Thanksgiving Dinner. I guess the idea was you skip lunch so you can binge and have ample time to digest before bed. My BIL would always arrive late holding up the whole production, request a clean plate for every refill and leave immediately after finishing dinner. I got into the habit of just stacking 3 plates at his "spot", getting up from the table after I finished, walking to the door and just holding it open.

Now I do 5:30-6:00P like a normal dinner hour as it takes me all day to get up the energy to cook. I've scaled back to a turkey breast and a couple traditional sides.

It's pretty simple... Most eat Thanksgiving "dinner" at about 2 or 3pm, because you're most likely not eating lunch that day... So unless you filled up on snacks etc throughout the day... You're hungry enough to stuff your face in the early afternoon.

The Raiders are on today, so we have pushed back dinner to 5:30 PM. I sort of like the early dinner. Nobody wants to help clean-up after and then lounge around and have coffee and dessert. It just ain't the same as it used to be.

I think it comes from the days of yore when "dinner" was the big meal of the day, usually taken in the early afternoon - what we might call "lunch" today. "Supper" is the evening meal, usually of lighter fare. So we have "Thanksgiving Dinner" at the traditional dinner hour. Or not...

I'm in your camp however my wife is of the early type. We split the difference at 4.

I get why you are a Raiders fan but, I kind of look down on raider fans in Los Angeles. I liken them to Walter from the Big Lebowski. Remember, he would watch his ex-wife's dog when she went on vacation with her new husband.

We're driving a half hour over the mountain today over to my brother's house.
He and his wife are frying the turkey and making dressing and gravy and green beans.

I'm preparing the baked ham, sweet potato casserole, and Idaho mashed potatoes.

We'll arrive at 2:30 pm and will probably eat at 3:00 pm.
Perfect time for a supper.

Beth and I will drive home as it's getting dark at 4:45 pm, and then come home and feed the dogs and crack a few cold beers.

I won't drink alcohol over at my brother's house.
Can't risk a drunk driving arrest, no sir, no way.

Supper? I always thought Thanksgiving Dinner was lunch. Usually a late lunch just because of preparation times and people-wrangling.

We’ve always eaten Thanksgiving as the lunch meal, so around 1:30.

Today is my first time ever eating thanksgiving at a restaurant. We are on vacation in Tennessee.
I’ll admit it’s much easier than waking up at 4:00am to start frying turkeys.
