    Hi!

I have an old MIJ Squier P Bass. It's an SQ series bass from about '83 or '84. I love it. It plays great! And it sounds good! I love the sunburst too.

However, the stark white pickguard has never really appealed to me, and I've always wanted to upgrade the electronics.

Today I picked up a tortoiseshell and mint green guards. I plan to get a Fender PV '63 pickup and wire it up just like an AV '63 P.

What colour should I go with?

This tort is pretty brown. I noticed the iconic look is more a red tort.

"Mint" is lame as hell, unless it's the real deal, from the early '60s. None of the "based on" versions are worth a damn.

Tort, indeed, but a redder tort as you already surmised

No, not close at all. Only Dave W has made a Devil’s Bargain to forsake tort on sunburst (or anything...!)

return them both and get a b/w/b instead, works great with the rosewood board too.

I remember ~1973 or so a salesman at a local small guitar shop was so excited because he ordered a new Jazz Bass from Fender for himself, and it came with a B/W/B guard instead of tortoise. Evidently this was the newest thing at the time. Suddenly tortoise was supposed to be corny and old fashioned.

The '70s are corny and old fashioned now, and tortoise guards still look great on sunburst Fender basses.

I like white, black and tort with sunburst...don’t believe a I’ve ever seen mint on that finish.

But here’s what I really like on a sunburst P: gold anodized!

I don’t like sunburst on Fender style instruments because it doesn’t look good with most pickguards. Black on sunburst is too dark. Tort on sunburst is lame. Mint on sunburst is weird. That leaves white.
