The two best rock guitar players on the planet are ( still with us!) David Gilmour and Alex Lifeson.

This piece is another testament to the phenomenal guitar craft and tone of Alex.
This piece gives me chills hearing just how good Rush was.

Gary Moore has been mentioned previously, and I love all of his work, but my personal all-time favorite from him is this live version of Need Your Love So Bad:

    AND...

Robert Metzger's guitar solo in this live performance of Bird On A Wire by Leonard Cohen always gives me chills:

As soon as I saw the topic Duane Allman’s slide on The Coda came to mind. And it’s true. Gives me chills EVERY time.
I know there are those who HATE The Coda.
    Not me.

Underrated band, such a pity they were so self-destructive.

Similar? (It's 'cued' up, but I guess you can listen to the rest of it if you want.)

Whenever that song comes on the radio I wait for the solo, hoping it’ll be this one. Hardly ever is and that drives me nuts. This solo rocks unlike any other he did.

    I hate guitar solos
You with your long fingers and and heart felt playing
But if I had too chose
I love that the guitar plays thru the whole song

Andy Powell's solo from 3.40 onwards has been raising the hairs on the back of my neck since I first heard it, around 1972.

Link Wray’s solo on Robert Gordon’s “Is This the Way” is nothing short of heartbreaking. Nothing fancy. Nothing false. My favorite solo.

Came here to make sure Maggot Brain and La Villa Strangiato were on the list.

    Listen on headphones.

Also Strangiato's 6/8 solo builds perfectly, tells a story, and has flawless dynamics. That and Limelight's solo are examples of how to do contrast.

Buried in the turgid prog-fest (IMHO) that is the second side of the Moving Waves album by Focus from 1972, is this little gem of Jan Akkerman wonderfulness, the magic starts at 1 minute in:
