You know a steak from Chris Ruth's steakhouse, and a taco from Taco Bell eventually end up in the same place.

Yup; I have never heard someone complain about the price or experience at Ruth's Chris but I have heard plenty of complaints about Taco Bell. Haha

Taco Bell may be a more warming experience in the end.

No? Okay, I'll start. It's overpriced business food for expense accounts (my former use case) and in terms of the experience, faux luxury dining. I've eaten there four times; was it ever a bad meal? No, and at $50-75 to start it shouldn't be, but the only thing franchises do well is keep costs down; that RC is a nationwide enterprise is enough reason to keep searching for me.

For me it breaks down like this- let's use the film industry as an example.

"OK, we're going to sink a bajillion dollars into making a movie and we want to make sure we make as much money off it as possible. Find me a script that has something for everyone- drama, action, romance, comedy, all the usual stuff. Make sure it's a sequel, spin-off, remake or part of some big blockbuster franchise so that anybody that saw the other films will come see this one. Hire a couple a-list stars that have had other big hit movies lately so people will come see this thing regardless. While you're at it, get a director that's had a bunch of recent blockbusters too."

"Will do, sir! What should the movie be about?"

    "Who gives a $#&*?"

Products that seek mass appeal in order to maximize profit generally have to dilute themselves so much to appeal so broadly, that there isn't really anything interesting left about them.

Ruth's Chris is awful and overpriced- it provides the appearance (and expense) of fine dining to people who either don't know any better or don't care. Taco Bell on the other hand has no pretensions about what it is.

    Cost versus Margin.

There is a reasonable margin and there are selfish margins.

Have you noticed how many "companies" are now involved in a film. When you have so many partners and each expects his standard margin it can inflate cost.

When I was in business I never liked bidding a job as a sub-contractor because I knew if there was a full-service contractor bidding we would lose the job.

There is NOTHING wrong with making money ethically. It's only bad when you pay your employees so little that they have to go on government assistance; or you ignore pollution laws and the taxpayers have to pay to clean up your mess; or if you ignore regulations and produce an unsafe product; or you fail to pay your taxes, or any one of dozens of other unethical behaviors.

The problem is that people and businesses get greedy and abandon their legal and moral obligations.

I'm a capitalist. I have no problem with folks making money. To me the "money grubbing" part fits with the attitude from the top that says I'm making all I can and screw everyone else.

It says I could give raises to workers but I'll take the money instead while I'm at it I'll cut their benefits and lay off a bunch. It says I want my competitors to be "unable to pay the mortgage" (that's from a meeting of corporate big wigs I once attended). That statement disturbed me so much at the time and I remember thinking I want no part of this. BTW the guy who said it didn't last long.

If you work hard...I think no matter how much you make, it should be shared with everyone else. Especially those less fortunate that are too lazy to work while criticizing how much you earn,...err wait.

Amen. I think the prices for tickets/merch/etc. are outrageous and I won't pay them. But as long as other people will pay them, I want that money going to the people risking their bodies on the field for our entertainment - not the beancounters.
