Wonderful story, sort of good song, I guess (not my style of music), inspiring video. Tears? Not even close. Didn't even make me choke up.

"John Henry" can be pretty sad if you sing it right.

    Love those.

But he has written a specific song for the purpose.

John Renbourn Group: The Trees They Grow High (guess this an update from Pentangle)

Both have an element of "didn't see that coming" which is quite effective.

Not sad, but very emotion invoking.

Excellent choice. It is simply a masterpiece of a song in every respect. Bonnie's delivery really drives the message home.

I remember as a kid my mom playing this record over and over and crying each time. I really grew to despise the tune.

The worst ever of the sad songs is "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers. It was one I heard way too much of. It traverses musical boundaries going from sad to wimpy and culminating in nauseating. I was pretty disappointed to hear Pearl Jam cover it.

Written by Rupert Holmes of Pina Colada fame. I know a couple of these guys. I used to go see them a lot in my youth.

There is a fella on YouTube,, 'The Angriest Guitar Player', I think he goes by,,,

His song, "I'm A Magic Man",, is the saddest song I have ever heard!

If you're looking for sad,, this would be a good place to start!

    enjoy!! RM

I remember hearing a piece on NPR about Sittin on the Dock of the Bay a while back that made the case that it was one of the saddest songs ever. It made a compelling argument, especially considering it was unfinished by the time of Redding’s death. The whole story told by his former band mates was a total guy punch.

Always thought it was a great song but never knew there was such a story to it. First posthumous no 1 single ever

    PlainAllman,

Good call on the Collin Raye tune. That one gets me, too.

I was thinking about this song: the theme is one of the saddest one can imagine, and it really happened to him too. Though the music is not really sad.
As if it would be unbearable to add a sad melody to such a thing.
