Others have already mentioned some songs by Townes Van Zandt. Eric Taylor was a friend of Townes, and I think with this song he equalled or surpassed his friend for creative sadness.

I think that's a Ricky Skaggs song, one of his best come to think of it.

Thanks for the reminder, I've been meaning to work out "Comin' Back to Me", but I had forgotten about it.

Cut to 3:53 to skip the intro.

    Is this version sadder?

    Saved the best for last?

    Couple from Fred.

And I spilled you on the mirror
And I chopped you into lines
And over some old kitchen sink
I swore I'd let you die

Songs by John Prine, Ryan Adams, and the the Afghan Whigs come to mind, but this one stands out for me:

While, in my most humble and probably ignorant opinion, there is no ONE saddest song but the one that can take all the marbles for me has to be George Jones.
So many great tunes have been mentioned. Some I know and some I don’t (yet)
    Great thread!!!

Has this been posted? 23 times sadder than the original Tears for Fears version.

And to think this was banned for a spell because of its supposedly obvious reference to marijuana.

Love this thread! Maybe I missed it but have we gotten this far without any Nick Lowe? Here are two that I find deeply moving and sad:

I think in threads like this you should be required to post links instead of embedding the videos. Just sayin'.

If the music don't get to you.

    the word's most likely will.

    Old Shep by Red Foley

When I was a lad and Old Shep was a pup
O'er hills and meadows we'd stray
Just a boy and his dog, we both full of fun
We grew up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin' hole
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
Shep was right there, to the rescue he came
He jumped in and helped pull me out

So the years sped along and at last he grew old
His eyesight was fast growin' dim
Then one day, the doctor looked at me and said
"I can't do no more for him, Jim"

With a hand that was tremblin', I picked up my gun
I aimed it at Shep's faithful head
I just couldn't do it, I wanted to run
And I wished they'd shoot me instead

I went to his side and I sat on the ground
He laid his head on my knee
I stroked the best pal that a man ever found
I cried, so I scarcely could see

Old Sheppie, he knew he was goin' to go
For he reached out and licked at my hand
He looked up at me, just as much as to say
    “We're partin' but you understand”

Now Old Shep is gone where the good doggies go
And no more with Old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a Heaven, there's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home

The Grand Tour by George Jones is a real sad one.
