I'm thinking that the best way to measure this is, to honestly admit which song makes you cry the most - even if you are one of those who "don't cry". If a song can't make you cry - how sad can it be?

For me, back in 2013 I attempted to do a cover of the instrumental parts of George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today". I did not succeed. To this day, I cannot work with that multi-track without ending up as a quivering, snivelling wreck.

Number two on my list is: Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun from 1974
Number three is: ABBA - The Winner Takes it All from 1980
Number Three: Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys 1969

These are the songs that I cannot listen to in public. What are yours?

I Can't Make You Love Me Bonnie Raitt. I’m bawling just typing the title.

"You are My Sunshine" is right up there.
Don't believe me? Actually listen to the original lyrics sometime.
    The verses.

Yes, remember that one from my younger days. Melancholy - buy I'm still dry-eyed.

Stevie’s instrumental version of Little Wing brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. The context for that is a little different than what the OP is probably referring to, but that’s it for me.

Not sad, but I usually shed a tear for the Star Spangled Banner.

It gets my vote, and has the same effect on me.
I went to a house concert featuring co-writer (with Mike Reid) Allen Shamblin with my late songwriter friend, Bill.
I had to duck out, I started crying.
    Embarrassing.

The official World's most saddest song is 'Gloomy Sunday' by Rezso Seress.
It has been blamed for over 200 suicides, including the composer himself.
Billie Holiday did a version of it (with extra lyrics).

Down in a Hole by Alice in Chains. So sad that the writer feels that there is no way to be saved from his current situation.

Two come to mind, the first is the song James Taylor sang at John Belushi's funeral :

The other one is a Hank Williams tearjerker :

I like this. But I'm going to play it as I re-read one of my Raymond Chandler novels - just for athmosphere.
