What is the attachment at the bottom of the guitar?

Where a bridge tailpiece would be? That odd black 'U' kinda thing? And is it related to that thing attached between the bridge and bridge pickup?

I was looking for dimensions of a Warmoth Mooncaster and found these pics online.

weird, it looks kind of like the mute you see on some jaguars.. but upsidedown.

.. could be some kind of mute... maybe

How about a Roland midi synthesiser. You never know when you might want your guitar to sound like an oboe.
Having used Roland guitar synths for the last 16 years or so, I've never desired an oboe sound, but the sax, flute, trumpet, brass section, fiddle, pedal steel, piano, jazz organ, B3/Leslie organ sounds have all come in handy. Come to think of it, the oboe sound fits right in for the lick in "Sixteen Tons" as recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford, so that's when one might want it!
