Years ago I build a few varieties of hi-fi headphone amp for use with an audio source like an ipod, either using its headphone out or line out.

How could something like that be adapted to be a dedicated headphone amp for a guitar? I'm guessing going from a powered source to passive pickups requires something more.

It's not going to sound good. Most of the tone associated with a proper tube amp comes from the speaker. Headphones are not going to cut it. I had built a load box with speaker load emulation with a headphone out, and it sounded like doo-doo. For a headphone amp, you're likely gonna need some digital modeling black magic.
