What is Naphtha called in the UK?

May seem like a silly question, but could anyone tell me what the UK equivalent of Naphtha is called?

Is it just white spirit?

Technically, Naphtha is a common name for a group of higher order petroleum destillates. There are several versions available as camp fuels, sometimes called power fuels. I think heptane is the most common clean version, but I'm not totally certain......

That's naptha the chemical right enough...

In the UK naptha is called naptha, as a chemical. It contains some very nasty chemicals e.g. toluene and xylene. Also called pet-ether in a lab (petroleum-ether, not to be confused with "ether" the anaesthetic). I'm not sure the public could buy this as it contains banned carcinogens, but we can buy lighter fuel containing the same evil stuff. We can buy unleaded petrol containing absolutely-verboten class-1 carcinogen benzene (good thing we got rid of that nasty lead). Go figure

What is meant by "naptha" as a solvent/cleaner on here is petrol-lighter fuel (which /do not/ run on petrol/gasoline) e.g. Zippo.

I used to buy it in quart cans from hardware stores, and it was labeled as Benzine, VM & P Naphtha.

Also, just regular ol' parts cleaner/degreaser, like what you'd get at an automotive paint store is naphtha too. A gallon is cheap and lasts a long time.

Good question Munki and I have found it confusing on seeking the same answer myself when I have seen people say White Spirit, isn't, Naptha.

Maybe there are different types of White Spirit - I don't know. From what I have found Naptha (as is VM&P) is a solvent used for thinning oil based Varnish/Paint. (Sounds like White Spirit to me! lol)

White spirit is a mineral oil based product , more related to kerosene than to petrol.
Naphtha is a very light derivative, also oil based, but of much higher order.
The closest we can get here in Europe, is heptane in the pure form, or as various form of burner fluid, ligher fluid, camping fluid, etc.
Higher order solvents are getting more endmore difficult to buy freely here in Europe... in Norway, I cannot buy nitrocellulose lacquers anymore, except for stupid small cans of .15L for 15£ !

In the UK...

UK white spirits for thinning paints and cleaning brushes is in military stores parlance "OM1" i.e. "Oil Mineral No.1" The number relates to its viscosity roughly the SAE - it is a thin mineral oil, and thus it is a collection of various petroleum derived "solvents".
It is similar but not quite the same as lighter fuel, which /is/ the naphtha refered to for cleaning guitar bits.
Pure naphtha is "petroleum ether" (pet. ether), this again is a petroleum distillate mixture.

Nitrocellulose lacquer can be had in bottles from Halfords and elsewhere, as the base for various spray paints and as the clear varnish top-coat, same stuff.

White gas is Coleman fuel, another proprietary variation on the white spirit / lighter fuel.

Fyi "sweeping compound, oil absorbent" is Fullers-earth cat litter.
