What is Bohemian Rhapsody really about?

My whole life I thought Bohemian Rhapsody was about person 1 had killed person 2 and now is facing the death penalty, something like that.

Lately I've been watching a lot music reaction videos. Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the songs I watched and I watched a few reactions of it.

One of those reactions brought up the idea that person 1 committed suicide, and that is what the song might be about, no person 2. It just seemed probable that suicide was what Freddie Mercury was writing about. But I don't know.

    Thoughts?

Yeah, I always figured it was about a man contemplating suicide.

And otherwise, a ton of metaphors.

It could be reactions to bullies?

I had heard something along the lines of Freddie coming to grips with the person he really was. In the movie you could tell that he was torn between being in love with Mary and also having this other side of him that did not go along with the lifestyle in the 60s and 70s.

"I see a little silhouette of a man" might be his view of himself as the silhouette only shows one aspect of a person.

I think it's one of those songs, that you could pretty much read anything into.

I always felt that Mercury's songwriting was based on feelings and emotions rather than storytelling. He was really good at suggesting images through his songs and lyrics. I also think that it is the reason why so many of his songs can be appreciated by a large audience.

So in my understanding, Bohemian Rhapsody is about remorse. The imagery relates to this complex feeling and its impact on a young person's life.

    Favourite line: Bismillah!

How many other pop songs invoke the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate?

It’s a fever dream that transitions into a tone poem about the inequity of society and one man’s struggle with his place within it and coming to terms with his perception of the hopelessness of the human condition...

(The above is crap cobbled together/misremembered from a lifetime of reading “critics” giving their “perspective” on rock music)

(blah blah blah fart fart fart...)

Ya know, this is what’s great about this place. All the back and forth half serious/serious/obvious joking and passionate arguments over in the Tone Master thread, then this thread where a real actual thoughtful discussion is taking place about one of the greatest bands ever. Not trying to derail the thread. Just makes me happy.

Because Hungarian Rhapsody and Bulgarian Rhapsody were already taken, Freddie had to settle for Bohemian.

    Croatian
    Herzegovinian

BR is obviously open to interpretation, but I always took it as being about the need to leave a staid upbringing to live a more unique and authentic lifestyle. Could be related to sexuality, artistry, creativity . . . probably all of the above. Kind of an obvious interpretation; it's right there in the name of the song "Bohemian Rhapsody."
