I was reading a post earlier and I thought... what if you are 'ol green teeth' in the Charlie Daniels song? Do you see yourself? What if you are Mr. Jones? What if you are the nephew of Old Judge Jones?

When you hear the song, are you offended or thrilled to be thought of?

Does Cross Eyed Mary feel bad about having a famous song about her?

Would Amos Moses' grandson have a more detailed account of their overall living situation?

Was Uncle Albert saving the pie for a sick neighbor?

Jackson Browne liked 'Car on a Hill' written and performed by joni mitchell, but was not happy about 'not to blame' by mitchell....

I've written at least one song from an ex's point of view, regarding me, and turned it around, pretending it was my own point of view, regarding her.

People love that song and assume it's emotionally difficult subject matter...if they only knew...

When I was as about 3 or 4, I was certain Johnny Cash was telling me not to take my gun to town.
    I did anyway.
After all, I wasn’t scared, I had my guns, and a big roll of caps.

This is yet another good reason to never date Taylor Swift.

This is one of the reasons why I was never an Mtv fan. Once you see a video--that can become your experience with the music, and it loses any personal meaning.

Would Polk Salad Annie's momma, who was working on a chain gang, been upset to hear her daughter referred to as a wretched, spiteful, straight-razor totin' woman?

Furry Lewis was mad regarding the song Joni wrote about him-he thought he should be reimbursed somehow! The song did raise his profile and likely he got more gigs because of it.

Years ago in a moment of inspiration I wrote a love song for my wife and I mentioned my kids too. They all were embarrassed and asked me not to do it again.

    Yikes.

I would not want to be Sexy Sadie. She was apparently not the best guru money could buy.

Lyrics can be selectively applied to recognize faults in others or qualities in ourselves .

    that is awesome.

I don't think you'd do that.... do you think that is the predominate use?

in Ready or Not by Jackson Browne, he punches an unemployed actor (which he was, the story was that Browne was interested in Phyllis Major and the actor was too... the ensuing brawl (of sorts) ended with the actor beating the fire out of Jackson (noted in the song) so, Browne, minimally, is self deprecating...

I totally identify with his line in "late for the sky" where he asks 'how long have I been sleeping?'

or in the song by the dudes who do valley winter song, there is a song about a flooring guy seeing a girl he knew in high school... now famous and on tv and he pathetically wonders if she'd ever like him... I've been that guy... to a point....

is it always used in such a petty way?

I can tell you it's not necessarily any fun to be the guy in a lot of Springsteen songs. like the whole darkness on the edge of town album, for instance. not that every single detail would line up perfect, but plenty would. great record, not a fun record.
