I just stumbled across this last night, and it blew me away. I need to share with someone!
That guy is good! Dang!
The melody has too much of a 'major chord' feel, which makes it happier sounding than it needs to be. And too much autotune on the vocals!
It may be partly because I totally wore out AIC’s “Dirt” while driving back and forth from home to college, so am pretty locked in to the way the original sounds...but to me the posted version sounds like guys trying too hard to make the song their own, at the expense of the original version’s melody and feel.
I get what the OP means, though, that there are Soundgarden-like elements in the crunch and the guy’s voice. I listened to both bands a lot for a long time, though, and it’s an interesting premise and observation.
I would not be surprised to learn that these guys might have also listened to a little Dream Theater at some point.
In no way do I mean to diminish the OP’s enjoyment in listening to this version; that’s just my reaction.
I would think that the altered vocal melody was purposely put into a more major feel in order to approximate Cornell’s style.
Very cool! He definitely threw the Sounddragon sound into it (as we used to call them).
Sabbath-y part in the chorus riff really seals it. Nice find.
Missing the Kim Thayil wah extravaganza solo/jab.
