What guitar player did BB King tell, "That's about as good as I've ever heard" ...?

If you're a blues/rock guitarist, and you could receive a compliment on your playing from any other guitar player in the world... who would be? You'd have to consider that receiving a compliment from BB King might be as good as it gets. But what if BB complimented you after your solo with these words, "That's about as good as I've ever heard." It would be difficult to know how to receive such a compliment.

But that's exactly what he told Derek Trucks after this solo.

And John Mayer wisely declines to take another turn. I would have declined too. Hopefully we can all have a bright moment in the sun at some point, and when you're sitting next to someone else who is in the spotlight, the best thing you can do is to direct all of the attention in the room away from yourself, and to that person.

BB King is The Man - and he knows.

when he throws out compliments , he makes them count and Derek is in good company. BB once said Peter Green was the only white boy that made him sweat !

And dig the agelessness of BB’s musical mind.

    He’s a musician .

The average dude his age would hear Derek and say “What’s that ? What’s he even doing ? Is that music ?”

BB has been leading bands and doing gigs for 60+ years and his brain was probably going *ping ping ping* like all of ours were the first time we heard Derek - like, “wait a minute , this is new , what the hell is he doing ?!”

On top of that - to me, it sounds like Derek's solo is inspired by BB's singing style. Goes around comes around.

Good stuff. I used to listen to BB's show on Sirius (geez, I miss him, tho I don't miss Sirius). His radio sidekick / co-host would *often* ask him: "Did you ever play with (names a player... Stevie, Billy, Joe, etc....)???"

BB would always reply: "No, but he played with me...."

Apparently B.B., like so many, did not clue in to the truth of what was before him: Derek Trucks is not human. He's some sort of cyborg, or maybe even pure robot.

I thought the same thing. It was like Derek was paying homage to BB's voice.. which is a very cool thing to imitate. Derek was hitting notes that... although I know where they are... it never strikes me to land on them in the same places where Derek did in that video.

I saw him on his 70th birthday.
    I got the present, though.
He and his large band rocked!
    He was a class act.
    RIP, and thank you sir.

I was there too. I knew a local DJ who got me back stage, and I got to meet BB and shake his hand.

Elvin Bishop was sitting next to me in audience. Cool show for sure.

    Cool!
I saw him at Vanier Hall in Prince George, BC.
It must have been the fall of 1995.
My friend Derrick got to meet him and shake his hand.
He was a joyous presence, for a blues man!:);)

Derek is a fabulous player. I’ve tried to get into TTB, but they just don’t excite me. I hope he still has an epic project or two up his sleeve while we’re both above ground.

I think he said something to the effect that Green was the only one out there that gave him the sweats.

Derek surpassed Duane about 20yrs ago and I really don't think he gets enough credit.
