Yep! That Viper; that’s what he had. As I recall it was sort of a clown burst finish but man, that was more than 30 years ago. I do remember the feel and sound pretty well.Nope, mine are cheap Chinese mini-humbuckers with bars instead of poles under a solid cover. They sound even better than I had hoped. The original Breadwinner pickups were either humbucker-sized toroidal single coils (pre-1975) or mini-humbuckers with a dual line of poles and a 3-screw mounting system (1975 and later).
I know the pickups you're thinking of though, and came stock in the bridge position on the Ovation Viper, which is probably what your college friend had. See here:

Thanks, I love it!
It's a great guitar, I bought it new either late 2014 or early 2015 and had it modded to Tele single coil sized P90s and Tonecraft pots and switch. It hasn't been played for a couple of years though and I'd estimate that it has a total of around six hours home playing time on it, never gigged. I had it put back to stock last week and put a deposit down on an early 70s SG this week which was partially to get me motivated to sell some guitars to make up the balance, arranged to sell a bass to a friend yesterday and that and the Tele should make half of what I still owe on the SG and I'll sell the single coil sized P90s to continue taking down the balance. Some other guitars will also be sold, I just have too many guitars for the limited living space, with the SG purchase I was thinking one in and four, possibly more, out.I hope you know what yer doin
That strategy has stopped a lot of guitar sales around here lol
