Nope, mine are cheap Chinese mini-humbuckers with bars instead of poles under a solid cover. They sound even better than I had hoped. The original Breadwinner pickups were either humbucker-sized toroidal single coils (pre-1975) or mini-humbuckers with a dual line of poles and a 3-screw mounting system (1975 and later).
I know the pickups you're thinking of though, and came stock in the bridge position on the Ovation Viper, which is probably what your college friend had. See here:

Yep! That Viper; that’s what he had. As I recall it was sort of a clown burst finish but man, that was more than 30 years ago. I do remember the feel and sound pretty well.

My 2022 Gibson Les Paul Standard '50s Gold Top. I always wanted a Les Paul so I finally decided to buy one.
The neck feels like a glove on my hand and the guitar sounds amazing. I love it!

This, Harley Benton 335 alike with coil tapping, reason I have been playing it above all others these past weeks us (a) it's a lovely guitar and (b) I put a set of Harley Benton coated strings on 3.50 euros a set, and am seeing how they last, so far three weeks and still going strong

I changed the pickups and nut on my 1990 Squier II strat this past winter, as well as experimented using 9s and played the heck out of it until about 4 weeks ago. Those 9s are coming off and going back to 10s....anyways..
since then it's been either my open G Micawbre or my Les Paul. I've noticed more over the past few years that I am pretty much a 50s-wiring Les Paul guy. As for my Telecasters, my 1996 52RI is hardly ever getting played, but my Micawbre just feels silky and is easier to play. That isn't just referring to the open tuning, there's just something about it despite have the same necks. I feel sad about it, because the 52RI was my main/only gigging guitar for maybe 10 years, and now it just sits in its case

It's a great guitar, I bought it new either late 2014 or early 2015 and had it modded to Tele single coil sized P90s and Tonecraft pots and switch. It hasn't been played for a couple of years though and I'd estimate that it has a total of around six hours home playing time on it, never gigged. I had it put back to stock last week and put a deposit down on an early 70s SG this week which was partially to get me motivated to sell some guitars to make up the balance, arranged to sell a bass to a friend yesterday and that and the Tele should make half of what I still owe on the SG and I'll sell the single coil sized P90s to continue taking down the balance. Some other guitars will also be sold, I just have too many guitars for the limited living space, with the SG purchase I was thinking one in and four, possibly more, out.

There's a Baja Telecaster sitting next to my desk which probably gets the most play. But upstairs, next to the printer sits my Patrick Eggle New York, it gets played acoustically whilst I wait for prints or scans to finish. When I picked it up to take a photo the top e string caught on the stand, so it now needs a new set.

My two newest guitars. My first baritone is a Chapman ML1. Very nice for the coin. Once I figured out I could play it with relative ease as I played a five string bass for years. That immediately sparked a cheap axe trade into a a jackson seven string witch is also great. The seven string is giving me fits because of the string spacing but i love it anyway! Who knows when the cheap Jackson will be replaced with something a bit more spendy. Next up is a multi scale/fanned fret!

Side note! I took a cheap Jackson with a FR(blech) in to trade for the Jackson seven string. Both of these are budget axes so I didn’t expect anything
special. Both of these Jackson’s have really impressed me. They come with graphite neck reinforcement!

A few months ago I got a Spark40 amp (super fun practice amp!). The amp can cover a ton of genres and tones. And because of that, I have found myself playing my Parker Nitefly more and more. That guitar, like the amp, covers a lot of ground. And the fact that it is a dream to play doesn’t hurt either.

This 2002 Gibson Les Paul Studio “Coppertop” that got in a trade. Supposedly only 200 made in 2002. It has a non-weight relieved solid Mahogany body, a big 50’s type LP neck, and an Ebony board.

I got this guitar and a much more expensive guitar in the trade, but it seems that I have been playing this one more.

I have an old Gretsch 6120 that has been seeing daylight a ton. It plays and sounds wonderfully and I don’t play it nearly as often as I should.
I guess I’m mostly a tele guy.
