The rotation-of-the-Earth etc. isn't "time".
I prefer daylight saving time. I like being able to do more “outdoor stuff” after work. I vote that we don’t go back.
Amd never get back the hour I lost this morning?!
Sorry, BDLH, but it’s already gone.
I love it. You can actually do things before it gets dark. Before it was dark at like 5:30. Now I can go outside and stuff later. And sleeping is easier. It's actually dark all morning.
Where'd it go?
But the very concept of time and it's application in our daily lives is entirely derived from and intimately linked to the rotation of the earth. It's not some arbitrary idea somebody just dreamed up one day to control people, it is based upon a regular, observable, measurable, natural cycle that people, animals and plants are biologically tuned into, and have always followed in one way or another.
Actually, the concept of "time" IS an arbitrary idea somebody just dreamed up one day.
I wouldn’t agree with that.
The MEASURE of time is somewhat arbitrary-based upon properties of cesium atoms.
(A second was originally 1/86,400 of the rotation of Earth. But since Earth’s rotation is not constant, and we need to measure time with high precision - to make GPS work for instance - we went with the cesium atom.)
Time itself existed before there was anybody around to measure it.
Hey, I get where you are coming from..... when was that exactly?.....
surfers need to make rent, food and petrol for the van.. and boards of course.... these don't come from fresh air.... you need to grab a bit of work now and then to keep on the road.... most of the odd jobs on the coasts were building jobs when I was a kid.... builders like to start early...... unless of course you find bosses who surf, too.....
I didn't become a surfer to be a hunter gatherer and live like a cave man.... surfing has it's costs you still need to meet them.... especially if you want to go around the world surfing waves as I did....
I like it and wish it was instituted all year long! I hate the short daylight hours in the winter.
And didn't Ben Franklin come up with it? He was no idiot.
I've heard that more than once, but according to Wikipedia:
During his time as an American envoy to France (1776–1785), Benjamin Franklin, publisher of the old English proverb "Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise", anonymously published a letter in the Journal de Paris suggesting that Parisians economize on candles by rising earlier to use morning sunlight. This 1784 satire proposed taxing window shutters, rationing candles, and waking the public by ringing church bells and firing cannons at sunrise. Despite common misconception, Franklin did not actually propose DST; 18th-century Europe did not even keep precise schedules. However, this soon changed as rail transport and communication networks came to require a standardization of time unknown in Franklin's day.
Well he still was no idiot... And I still wish DST was all year round
He got this right: "Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy”
Okay, he didn't say that either, but still!
None of this would be necessary if someone hadn't tipped Earth's axis.
Let's bail on this hijack I started, but the short story is that I was in and around the industry for about 40 years
Not setting the clocks forward ensured that there are lower temperatures during waking and bedtime hours. This is a main reason why Arizona doesn't use DST and why Texas should also scrap it. Daylight Saving Time increased air conditioning and electricity usage.
Even if you had no conscious understanding of time, your body would still be marking it... A healthy human being will naturally wake up, feel hungry, need the bathroom and fall asleep at roughly the same times every day. You don't need to look at your watch to tell you it's lunchtime, your circadian clock tells you it's time to eat.
Made me think of this song.
