Google queries mostly come up with the picks his company sells. I want to know what he actually used.

I've read that he used thin picks. I started out with thins in the late 1960s, but have played Fender heavy or equivalent, or even heavier, for the past 40 years, for the bigger sound.

Now I'm trying thins again - you can really strum - I am kind of enjoying this.

Thanks if you know what picks Mr. VH actually used.

I wouldn’t get too hung up on someone else’s picks. Sounds like what you’re doing is working for you.

Eddie could have played with a lacquered dog turd and he’d still sound like Eddie. You won’t, you will sound like you and that’s really what you should strive for.

I know at least later in his career he was using a metal pick.

The only reason I know this is that like a lot of players, he placed the pick in his mouth while doing some non-pick-required stuff, and he blamed a metal pick in his mouth for moments at a time for his oral cancer, rather than smoking like a chiminey o_O

Uh... but he just wanted to know what picks EVH used. So if I asked what pick Brian May used would you say the same thing to me? Why didn’t you say “I dunno what pick EVH used.”

Well, I would say "That's not the correct answer to the question I asked and it would have been better if you had not posted at all. But thanks."

Thank you for the daily dose of forum policing. I hope you don’t kick any puppies today now.

Wait, you’re the same guy that started a thread complaining about his overpriced coffee, but I’m the jackass here?

Please carry on with the original thread. I don’t know what pick he used. You’ve already figured out the difference between heavy and thin picks. Use what works for you. What pick EVH used will not have any effect on your playing.

He sometimes lied about the equipment he used because he thought it was kind of funny, and it was.

So why does it matter? My original answer was not intended to be abrasive. The point was just play. Stop chasing what other people use down to picks and strings. Find what works for you and run with it.

If you look closely, you can see he's using Fender mediums here....

Although Ed being Ed, it's very likely that he experimented with all kinds of different types throughout his career.

Some people simply have curiosity about these things.
There's nothing wrong with that, and assumptions should not be made regarding their motivations for being curious

You are correct. In that way, I am at error. I just know we ALL have been guilty of chasing a particular player’s gear and I deeply regret the time wasted doing so. Peace to everyone.

It’s not that he is chasing anything, it’s just wanting to see if there is any possibilities of gaining some insight on EVH technique. For example wanting to know what kind of brushes Michelangelo used might be helpful in understanding his technique. You wouldn’t want to try to see if you could emulate it with a house paint brush (at least I wouldn’t).

Trying to figure out how the masters do stuff is all part of learning anything, IMO (I left out the H because know one has ever accused me of being humble).

Listen, you arent wrong, just kind of pointless on a gear forum.

    Thanks for the interesting replies.

Yes, I know what works for me - namely, Fender heavy (see photo at left). I just am curious about this famous virtuoso's pick. Fast picking has eluded me over the years. I'm experimenting with different gear - including this important element of the guitar-playing puzzle.

I saw a concert violinist on TV years ago who said he would rather play an unfamiliar violin than use an unfamiliar bow. I see his point.

Other fast players use tiny picks, I believe... sorry if I opened a can of worms.

What thickness reed did Charlie Parker use...

And you don’t seem to grasp the point of threads which is why you post useless information. My coffee thread wasn’t complaining about the PRICE of coffee, it was about the QUALITY of the coffee. Try to actually read AND understand the threads to which you reply or expect to get swatted again.

that's totally fair. But hopefully you learned a few things and made some progress in that pursuit, even if it was different than the goal you'd initially set out to attain.

“Swatted again?” You didn’t swat anyone the first time. You are ridiculous.

Also, why point out that the coffee was nearly $6 if that doesn’t matter?

Never mind, you’re from CA. It all makes sense now.
