Hound Dog Taylor, Link Wray, in his later years.

    Nick Curran.

Chuck Prophet comes to mind, with his Squier

I think Johnny Ramone's Mosrite was originally bought because it was dirt cheap.

    Who else?

My Chemical Romance used Epiphone even at the height of their career. Granted Frank Iero isn't the greatest guitarist.

I think their bassist used a Squier Mustang Bass, too.

Jack White used airline (plastic) guitars in the white stripes. Later in his solo career he wished up and now uses a bigsby equipped tele with a HB in the neck

yeah, in the Late 80s early 90s Mustangs and Jaguars were pretty cheap.

because of him I can't buy a Jag for less than $500 now.

Just about everything Sonic Youth played started out as a pawnshop find and then modded to fit their needs. I'd post a picture, but there are just too many.

    David Lindley made it cool.

Unless maybe he's not really an established act?

Joan Jett: Gibson Melody Maker (and Lzzy Hale also owns a JJ signature MM)

Mark Bolan: one of his main Les Pauls was a Japanese copy with a bolt-on neck

Noel Gallagher: used contemporary Epiphone Dots and Casinos in Oasis

Gary Clark Jr.: bone stock Epi Casinos in his early days (and his signature Casino is an Asian-made $1000 guitar... hardly the normal custom shop model)

Keith Urban: plays a lot of Epiphone Specials and cheaper Teles which he plays then gives away to fans at his shows

Paul McCartney: his Hofner bass was a cheap import in its day, when he easily might have bought a Fender or Gibson bass

Prince: His famous leopard skin Tele is an Asian-made Hohner copy

    JJ Cale.

A Dano Convertible; a $50 Harmony acoustic he modified and used on many of his early recordings; and a Casio Strat.

Funny... they all sounded like him!

(PSST! Lot's of good players like cheap guitars! After all... it's
all in the hands, ya know!)

    Oh.

Buddy Miller uses Danos and other strange pawn shop varieties for recording and live work.
