    Chuck Prophet comes to mind, with his Squier

    I think Johnny Ramone's Mosrite was originally bought because it was dirt cheap.

    My Chemical Romance used Epiphone even at the height of their career. Granted Frank Iero isn't the greatest guitarist.

    I think their bassist used a Squier Mustang Bass, too.

    Jack White used airline (plastic) guitars in the white stripes. Later in his solo career he wished up and now uses a bigsby equipped tele with a HB in the neck

    Jimmie Vaughn played his MIM tex mex strats for years.
    Manuel Galban (Buena vista social club) has played a MIM tele since the 90's
    Jimmy Page used a Harmony acoustic for lots of Zeppelin.
    Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs mani guitar is an 80's Japan strat.

    yeah, in the Late 80s early 90s Mustangs and Jaguars were pretty cheap.

    because of him I can't buy a Jag for less than $500 now.

    Just about everything Sonic Youth played started out as a pawnshop find and then modded to fit their needs. I'd post a picture, but there are just too many.

    Randy California of Spirit used a Silvertone guitar when I saw them in the 60s.
    Noodles of The Offspring plays Ibanez Talman guitars.

    Joan Jett: Gibson Melody Maker (and Lzzy Hale also owns a JJ signature MM)

    Mark Bolan: one of his main Les Pauls was a Japanese copy with a bolt-on neck

    Noel Gallagher: used contemporary Epiphone Dots and Casinos in Oasis

    Gary Clark Jr.: bone stock Epi Casinos in his early days (and his signature Casino is an Asian-made $1000 guitar... hardly the normal custom shop model)

    Keith Urban: plays a lot of Epiphone Specials and cheaper Teles which he plays then gives away to fans at his shows

    Paul McCartney: his Hofner bass was a cheap import in its day, when he easily might have bought a Fender or Gibson bass

    Prince: His famous leopard skin Tele is an Asian-made Hohner copy

    A Dano Convertible; a $50 Harmony acoustic he modified and used on many of his early recordings; and a Casio Strat.

    Funny... they all sounded like him!
