Hey guys. Newbie to the forum here though I’ve lurked around for a while. What does an “M” or “W” (depending on which vantage point it’s viewed from) mean when stamped in a Telecaster neck pocket? One outside “appendage” of the letter is longer than the other. Can someone enlighten me as to who stamps their bodies with this mark? Any help with the other markings would be more than welcome as well.

    Thanks in advance.

Looks like marker, not a stamp.

I suspect it's a mark made by someone who inspected the body at some point in the manufacturing process for whatever company made that body. I don't believe it's a Fender body - MIM and USA Tele bodies don't have the little opening at the top of the neck pickup cavity; not sure about Tele bodies for Squiers or Fender-branded instruments sourced from Japan, Korea, Indonesia, China, etc. (basically anywhere but Corona or Ensenada).

Thanks John. So then I guess the conclusion to be drawn is that I now own a partscaster. Not an American Special Telecaster?:(

The serial number could help identify what body the neck started life attached to.
You need to register at Fender to use their serial database.

However the US20 part is still visible, the bad news is that a US20 neck would be on an American Performer not American Special.

The mark, as JohnC said, would be added during the manufacturing process, neck pockets often have all kinds of scribbled marks in them.

Additionally, those tuners are not what would be stock on a 2020 American Performer. Fender fits them with what they call ClassicGear tuners which look vintage on the outside but are modern sealed inside. Does it look like they've been swapped?

Additionally additionally the Noiseless pickups were never featured on a Special or Performer. They could've been swapped into one but that doesn't explain the funky body.

FWIW the Performer replaced the Special series.

It seems way too easy to get a fake fender, to the point that I won’t even look for a used one. If it’s not new from a dealer I’m not interested.

It would be infinitely useful if each forum (vintage, custom shop, etc) had a sticky on how to identify real ones and how to spot fakes.

Yes; it's a parts guitar. The neck is an American Special neck - Fender still sells them as aftermarket/replacement necks so a recent one would have a US20 serial number. Since they come without tuners the builder/assembler put in the Fender standard tuners. The body isn't a Fender, but the pickups look like Fender Vintage Noiseless (those do faked on some Chinese counterfeits, but these look pretty real). I don't think the bridge is a Fender; it doesn't appear to have anything stamped on the plate.

So at least you got a legit Fender neck on it.

A college girl leaves for the weekend because her roommate's boyfriend is visiting.
Sunday, when she returns, she sees her roomie undressing and she has a big blue M on her bare chest.
She explains that she and her guy were in such a hurry to get in the sack, he left his college sweatshirt on and it bled onto her chest.
The returned roomie asks...So where does he go to school? Michigan? Minnesota?
The roomie answers, with a big smile, "Nope. Wisconsin!"

Well I suppose the neck and pickups being legit is somewhat better than the whole thing being fakola. But it still sucks knowing that I was taken for some extra ducketts

Doesn't look like they've been swapped. At least to my eye.(Which I'm not exactly trusting right now!) I was more or less thinking of the "special" and "performer" as the same guitar line anyway, but thank you for clearing it up for me

Thanks to all that chimed in with helpful info. And thanks also to those that chimed in with jokes too. A little levity can help push down the bile that's rising in my esophagus due to my realization that I was just the fool that parted with his money far too easily.
Now i gotta figure out what to do with this thing. I mean it actually plays and sounds pretty decently. But I've got a different axe in my sights. The money i was hoping to sell it for has now most likely been considerably lessened.:(
