I’ve never played a custom shop tele...how does it feel? Is there an obvious difference? Specifically the necks, and is it true that I should own one? One day I plan to have a custom shop builder at Fender make me one based on my personal specs and choices. I can't imagine the feeling when you first get to see and play it.

If anyone has done this, what's the price range? I see used ones selling for as low as $2200 or so, but at that price I'd prefer to "make my own."

    I’d love to see yours!

    Happy playing.

    Adam

Alas, I don't have a CS tele, but in the interest of bordom and inclusiveness, I do have a wonderful 2007 Strat. Thick 10/56 neck profile, med jumbo frets on a 9 1/2 radius neck. Great player and was besmerched by its previous owner, so it has some mods.

My current tele has a roasted maple neck, med/jumbo frets, 51 Nocasters, only thing missing is the nitro finish and worn in neck, maybe some relic’ing...so close. Daphne blue, rosewood fingerboard. Plays like a beast.

Would choose narrow tall frets and a modern C neck like the American pros have on a custom shop. What are some of the best options y’al
    Chose that you’d recommend?

You need to pick what you like!
My main tele is a partscaster because fender didn't make exactly I wanted.

I like fat necks with 9 1/2 radius. While I prefer med jumbos, my main tele has narrow tall and I've grown to love them.
I prefer vintage style tuners, I like the thin, stock bridge plates but prefer compensated saddles. I like 60s style bridge pickups and the strat sounding neck pickups. I like em to weigh in under 7 1/2 pounds but don't care for the super light sub 6 pounders. I prefer ash but have alder bodies teles as well.

This is a lot of money to drop, so you need to know what you want most!

On top of that, people that play my "perfect for me" tele don't usually say "oh wow", they generally exclaim "aw ****!" then comment on the neck finish, how it sounds and how weird it feels. It's not a goldilocks guitar.

As with any guitar, the answers to your questions are going to be completely subjective. I've played some Custom Shop guitars that didn't "do it" for me, and I've played some "budget-friendly" guitars that had to come home with me. That said, I feel I can notice the difference in feel & sound between "production" & "custom shop" guitars. I've also be fortunate enough to be able buy/sell/hustle/trade my way into a nice collection. And with that, gratuitous pictures of my current stable. My CS '63 Tele. I got this 2nd hand at Mars--The Music Planet (remember them?) in 2004. It was on the used rack. I went right to it because it looked like a well-played old Telecaster. Lake Placid blue, with a round-lam rosewood fingerboard.

I picked it up and it had a nice hand-filling chunk to the neck. The tag was marked $600, and I thought "I have 600 dollars I can blow on this nice old Telecaster." Then I saw the CS decal on the back of the headstock, and thought, hmmm, I think they meant to stick a 1 in front of the 6 on the price tag.

I'm an honest guy so I took it to register and asked if the $600 price was correct because it should be more than that. Yes, the marked price was correct. The guy said, "It has a case that comes with it." I asked to see the case. When it came out, there was a COA in there with all the CS case candy still in the bag. The guitar was a year 2000 medium relic. I plopped my cash down and the deal was done.

In 2008 I refretted it with stainless steel. It is a PEACH of a guitar. I need to play it more than I do.
