Hi, I just purchased a genuine fender maple neck online for a project. When it arrived I was surprised how figured it is around the bottom of the fretboard. Have you seen anything like this before and do you like it? To be honest I’m a bit unsure at the moment if I like it or not...

    I love it.

    Beats bland and uniform-appearing fingerboards.

I like it. It reminds me it’s made of wood.

I’ve been noticing that a lot more recently. It’s especially common on two piece necks with a separate fingerboard.

It would distract me, but I have a touch of OCD.

It would be cool if it were like that the entire length of the fretboard though.

before the specific responses to your inquiries, consider the following:

the appearance of that figuring in that neck will never change the sound of what you are playing.

no one listening to you play will ever discern any disturbance from that figuring in the neck. ever. Only 2 or 3% will ever even notice it.

In all likelihood, after a few weeks, you won't even notice it. Or a few months, whatever. it's a tiny detail of little importance, really.

Have I seen anything like it? Sure. Similar, but not exactly the same. There are thousands upon thousands of telecaster necks out there.

do I like it? Yep, even though I've seen "similar" figuring, none exactly like that. Uniqueness is a value to be cherished, IMO. If you want plain, that's on you.

Being a bit unsure? C'mon. It's a little bit of flavor in a bland, boring world.

Just on the academic side, it would be interesting to see the neck pocket end view of your neck, like in the photo below, so we can see how the figuring in your neck comes from the way it has been sawn.

    Curiosity and such.

Unblemished wood is harder and harder to find. Years ago a piece of streaked maple would be frowned upon. Put me in the camp that would rather have some uniqueness over uniformity.

I'm not that fond of darker color patterns in maple personally.
There is so much maple out there and a ton of it has birdseye and or flame too. Fast growing.
Some of the firewood I cut has flame you can see in it!
I saw a stock Fender MIM Strat neck with a lot of birdseye in it once.

Years ago I sold a bass that had a figured maple fingerboard. Very uneven response and sustain. The whole B string was like one long dead spot. The C on the G string AND the C on the D string did not sustain. Since then, guitars with figured maple fingerboards have not come into my arsenal.
