i think the over-powering colors are due to the photoshop stuff she was doing to them. the un-photoshopped versions aren't nearly as potent with the colors.

That's more of an anti-HDR effect... more like pseudo-Polaroid.

Tell her to go easy on the Photoshop. Crop and rotate, maybe dodge and burn a little, maybe tweak the curves a bit, but it's too easy to go nuts with it and lose sight of the important thing... the art of photography.

Heavy Photoshopping looks dated in a matter of months if not right away.

Very cool images, IMHO. I just started a thread encouraging members to post photos. Thought it would be fun...

They're all better without the photoshopping.

I'd encourage her to question her instructor about an assignment as trite and overdone as "old graveyard photos." She seems to have a decent eye through the lens and more cliche assignments are a waste of time for somebody who's got potential.

I have a minolta D7 with old lenses that just makes magic on sunny bright blue days.

This is not the ideal solution for the graveyard concept but i think it would add some more natural colour to the images prior to being stylised in Photoshop....

My favourite is the nail / rail photo. Very nice!

They are better before photoshopping. I'd suggest just adjusting levels/curves and maybe some moderate sharpening, but that's about it. On number two she could use some layer to make the cross stand out from the background a little more.

    2, 4, 6 and 7 have compositional qualities.

I don't know about that. I think I would encourage her not to do that. The assignment's done, and I don't think there's any benefit to be had in telling an instructor that an assignment he came up with is trite and overdone. Why antagonize your teacher -- especially in a class where the grades are likely to be highly subjective? Seems like pretty bad advice to me.

The initial ones look toooo shopped to me and comes off cartoony in my opinion and loses alot of atmosphere and natural composition in my eyes. I think black levels and balance is very important in a foto and I feel it might be abit over the top in Photoshop and in someways graphic filters have replaced alot of technique in some degree.

However I like the overlay filtered one, it looks alot more natural. Also I do like you frames.

Nice! I especially like the 3rd and fourth pictures. And I do like them better after she deepened the saturation with photoshop. That's the beuty of digital. What used to take hours and dollars in the darkroom to fix, if it could be fixed at all, is now just a couple mouse clicks away.

It probably is...I was a little punchy last night. I had witnessed some BAD teaching earlier in the day and was still carrying it in my mind.

I do think the assignment's trite and overdone, but yeah, questioning the teacher on it probably isn't a great route.

And that's coming from an Art Teacher, by the way...

Very nice. I find a haunting elegance to some of the photos. Great interpretation of assigned subject matter. Every photographer throws away far more then they keep. IMO she done real good. There are some keepers in there.
