Yeah, I just turn the bad note into some cool jazz (like I can play jazz). OR I pull a PeeWee..."I meant to do that"....at least I think that's PeeWee.

The only song I know of in which minors get hit is this one:

'I Fought the Law' is a good choice here.

As a bassist I think I know what you are saying.

Say the song chord progression is IV, VIm, V, I in the key of A.

    As a bassist I am playing D, F#, E, A, probably walking up from the D to the F#.

I think that while the idea of major is happy and minor is sad might be an over simplification, taking a look at theory related to emotion, which is core to self expression on your instrument; it's really worth delving into listening to the note options and how a small interval change makes you or the listener feel.

Playing music should make the listener feel something!

We keep reading theory theory theory, which seems kinda theoretical.

But theory is just a tool for teaching, so we can learn, so we can create music.
If the essential tool of using intervals known as minor is a missing bit of learning, the player is missing a most important tool.

My "go to" notes on bass are:
    Root
    5th
    flat 7
    octave

You can go all night without playing a third and nobody's gonna look at you funny IME.

    Just to report:
I wound up in a position to play bass (albeit on my ASAT.) I didn’t have time to switch instruments when I decided to do the bass parts rather than the lead. Our bassist didn’t show for the second set.
I did scan two of the posts I remembered here to help me. I did use the tips... thanks. Oh, it was crazy fun and a challenge.

    A little theory doesn't hurt. It's fun!

Carole Kaye, said she never plays thirds, she says thay sound goofy.
so if we avoid thirds (major or minor) we can get through it and still be musically correct
