I was going to go upstairs and play guitar, but I'm listening to the Irish Music show on our local community radio station and I put it off. It made me realize that a lot of times I'll put off playing as I want to listen to something. Both are good, but I think it's sometimes an excuse to not practice. How about you?

I play almost every day but I listen a lot more — a lot of it when I’m driving to work, at work, or driving home afterwards: apparently playing guitar is frowned upon by the relevant authorities while participating in those activities...

    In the summer ,definitely .

Lucked into my own “Trigger” a few years back and in the summer I’m pure gut string . Can’t get enough.

And also I was just looking at a bunch of CDs I said I was going to listen to, but it’s been at least six weeks since I said that...

I don’t listen to music much any more. Sometimes in the car. Or YouTube videos almost never CDs or records.

I play every day and get the most musical pleasure from the band or concerts.

I play WAY more than I listen to music.
That was the plan, all along

I play more. Listen to new old cds in truck when not catching up on politics. Listen to XPN while mowing. After 10 pm it's all playtime.

I play way more than listen as well. I play guitar everyday and if I am listening to music, 80% of the time is over and over repeats of a song I am learning on guitar. Mrs. Obsessed, the bass player, can just sit and enjoy listening to music, whereas I am studying anything I listen to.

I listen to music more that i play but not by much. And when I do listen I try to hear new stuff rather than stuff I've heard and like. But I'm not too successful at that either.

Listen only in the car now even then rarely. My wife and I were just talking about how it used to that we used to intentionally but on an album and sit and listen intently, absorb the artwork and liner notes. I used to know all the session players names and was interested to know all of the projects they worked on. Guys like Danny Kortchmar, Skunk Baxter, David Lindsey, Leland Sklaar etc. Now I don’t know anything and only buy songs when I want to learn one.

    I play a lot everyday

    Heh heh heh.

I have people at my workplace who work at their computers while listening to music thru their earbuds.
On occasion, I will ask them what they are listening to, and about the technology (Bluetooth, wireless??) aspects of their gear.

    And it inevitably comes up.

"So Sparky, how come I never see you with earbuds or headphones on?"

"I don't listed to music. I do my job, and can't think of such a distraction while I'm trying to work on other things."

"So, you listen to music in your car, and at your house?"

"No, not really. In my car I listen to talk radio. And at home, I generally need silence."

"But you're a musician. You make music, but you don't listen to music??"

"Rarely. Every now and then, and mainly when I want to learn the chord structure of a song we are working on for the band."

    "Man. You are weird."

    "I get that a lot."

    :(

Listen to more because of time in the car. At home I listen to more but not by much. If I have music on then I will grab a guitar and play with whatever is on Pandora or Slacker

So the answer to the question is, "I play guitar and other musical instruments every single day. But I rarely sit down and listen to music."

If it helps, for perspective, I also haven't watched television for many, many years.
And I rarely, if ever, go to the movie theater.

I guess I have lost my desire to be entertained.

I just prefer to make music, and to write.

    :)

I never listen to music all day like I did when I was young. Sensory overload. Most days I listen to a couple of things and ever so often maybe once a month I'll binge for a couple of hours. I usually play guitar a few times a day for 20 or 30 minutes now that I'm retired.

I couldn't decide on an answer to the poll question. What I do with a guitar couldn't be considered music even to my ears.

I listen more than I play.
    Playing is controlled, listening happens.
    It's a good thing.

I play guitar every day. When I have a radio on, it's almost always sports talk. I do like to hear new music I haven't heard before. I rarely am over the top in love with songs like I used to be when I drank and got high ALL THE TIME. I still believe there's great new music being written and recorded by young people (and us older people too).

I've been on vacation all this month. I listened to a lot of music; didn't touch a guitar the whole time.

There is IMO no reason why playing guitar should require being prisoner to it.

I listen all the time. While cooking, eating, driving, just sitting.

I don't care to learn other people's songs to play anymore. I'll knick an idea or concept though. It's all seeping in I suppose and I use it. But that's not why I listen.

I play most days. But I listen EVERY day.

Kinda with @boris bubbanov on this one.
