    well said.

I was called for jury duty back years ago for a homicide trial. and, as luck would have it, they hadn't arrived at the required number + alternates and so it was your humble poster came under the scrutiny of the local district attorney and council for the defense.
the DA goes first with a little chit-chat.
and then Bam-"How do you feel about capitol punishment?"
I answered that it would depend.
    "Depend on WHAT?"
on whether i'm on Death Row or not.

    I did not get chosen.

    Without a doubt, the transistor.

Very surprised that this isn't the most mentioned answer.

education , more of the population is educated , spawning a greater diversification of Ideas and technological advancement , SMD electronic componenets. it's only going to get better .

I told my kid that in their life time they will see such increadable developement that I am jealous I wont be around to expirience it all, but I can smell it on the horizon .

lets see if as a species we are not too stupid to travel down the road together

Microchips. They are at the heart of, or at least led to, most of the answers that come to mind for this question.

integrated circuits certainly important extremely key piece of technology.
The ability to store and process massive amounts of data allows all the other mind-boggling technology to blossom, like sharing all that information on the Internet.

But the one thing that blew my mind, somewhere around 1995 were the Hubble telescope deep Field images. certainly enabled by ultra high-powered integrated circuits and computer... digital imaging sensors.

in the 30s and 40s Edwin Hubble proved that some of the tiny nebula clouds nearby were actually galaxies..... all the sudden the universe was filled with 50 to 60 galaxies like our galaxy,,,, that was mind-boggling to everyone our massive Milky Way galaxy was supposed to be the entire universe.

And that led to the creation the Star Trek TV series, these galaxies were billions and billions of miles away... unreachable. but if you have a super cool warp drive you can travel to these 100 faraway galaxies, that make up the universe. I was consumed by the moon landing traveling in space, NASA and the Star Trek TV series during the 70s was amazing the universe seemed huge and vast and interesting.

but then the Hubble deep Field image ripped apart the concept of a couple of hundred galaxies being huge and vast.

so if you hold up a pencil at arms length the tip of the pencil is the size of field of space of the Hubble deep Field photo, which found approximately 10,000 galaxies in a tiny point of space.
That led to the calculations that every pencil point in the sky has ~10,000 galaxies.

We now sit at an estimate of 200 billion galaxies within our light horizon.
Mind-boggling crazy hard to understand the essence of what infinity means.

Just staring at that tiny tiny picture of 10,000 different galaxies, and imagining all of the planets and all of the life that's going on in that tiny tiny spot seems unfathomable.
we are very tiny and we have a chance to take care of our tiny ball of blue water rotating around our beautiful star.
