I’m turning 50 on Saturday.
I have never given it much thought as to what I would like to do.
I just bought a new San Dimas. A new set of pearly gates pickups. and a new Boss GE-7.
So I feel as though I’ve rewarded myself materialistically for the milestone. But what to do with the day?
Saturday will also mark my 90th day without a drink. That’s my longest run since I started flirting with sobriety.
I think my wife is a little bummed that I have not been receptive to any of her ideas as far as throwing a party or getting people together. I’m just not there.
I am going to ride a 50K on my bike. I have rode a 40K once a month for over a year now. So the 50K will not be a difficult challenge. That should take me about two hours.
I guess I will just play guitar and hang out with my wife and dog for the rest of the day.

I know a lot of you guys have already passed this milestone. What did you do with the day?

I did get nothing but repaired the year after that :D

Enjoy your birthday and do something great with Family and friends, and yeah get that vintage broadcaster you always wanted .. it's a special occasion :D, every excuse is good on your 50th, and there's the universal rule :
Nor Mom, Nor Fiancee/Wife have a say on that day on how much you'll spend :D

Enjoy !

The plan was to do an epic MTB ride to Big Pine in Los Padres outside of Santa Barbara. It was scrapped. That was the beginning stages of a long health scare that I thankfully got under control since. Good news is my 59th is Thursday. I've been lucky to have done some awesome rides in a new locale since to make up for it. Life is good again

I was just over 4 years sober on my 50th and was determined not to mark it like I'd done my 40th which had seen me getting ejected from the Gleneagles spa for being too drunk from the night before's 'celebrations', which embarrassed my wife and kids.

My birthdays are in January, so there are cheap deals on luxury/spa hotels.
Mrs K and I spent a couple of days at one in the highlands and returned home on the day of my birthday.
We went to my parents' house in the evening and met up with my kids, my 6 siblings, their partners and their kids, for a traditional homemade cake and candles, so around 35 people.

My kids (then in their 20s) got annoyed with my brother-in-law for turning up with a case of champagne at what was supposed to be a sober event but there's no changing the drink culture in Scotland so I let it pass.

The day after I went on retreat myself to Pluscarden Abbey in northern Scotland for a week with the Benedictine monks and it was a contemplative and peaceful experience.

Mrs K got me a Godin nylon string but it didn't arrive until May.

I don’t remember 50 particularly but that was the year I became older than my dad was when he passed, so it was certainly a time of some reflection. I’m sure I was with my family in Oregon. My wife just reminded me that she’d had a custom guitar strap made for my first scratch built guitar, which I remember, of course, but I’d forgotten what the occasion was.

Went to work, like every other day. Congratulations.

Woke up, went to work, came home.

I'm the same on both counts. I don't get the "you have to, because....." reasoning.
Same here. My birthday fell on Monday this year, so I celebrated on the weekend and just worked that day.

In relation to the posts I’ve quoted, here’s number 10 from Dave Barry’s “25 Things I Have Learned in 50 Years”:
10. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 11.

I turned 50 in 2012. That year, I was riding the crest of a wave. In the summer, around the time of my birthday, I went to another town to speak at the presentation of a book I’d coauthored. I also had some money saved, because work had been going very well, and I had plans for that money. Things went downhill in the autumn, as the coauthor struck a publishing deal behind my back, and I also lost an important client. A few other things went awry, making that year a real stinker in my life. Sorry to stink up the thread with my tale of woe. On the bright side, all the bad stuff happened after my birthday. I don’t remember what I did that day, but I know I had a great time!

Hope you have a good one, @Toadtele!

Our birthdays are 10 days apart. We had a joint 50th celebration by staying in a haunted castle in the North of England - Chillingham Castle in Northumberland, with Jackie's sister's family & her brother. No one wanted to go ghost hunting with me apart from her sister Kim. We had a wander around the dungeons in the black dark but didn't see anything. Had a great weekend.

Although I realise that there aren't many haunted castles in the US.

First off, Happy Birthday! Secondly, not sure quite what I did because it was a long time ago but I think it was the one where I came home from work to find that our old dog had vomited on 13 different spots in our carpeted living room. Cleaned that up and headed out for dinner or something, and a guy behind me started flashing his lights to tell me my taillights were out, then my T-100 tranny started acting weird, so I drove back home.

Both issues were resolved in due time, and I’d bet the night ended with a glass of good single malt.
