I've got a 50's classic tele body in Mary Kay with an Allparts Fat maple neck and I'm looking to get a super light swamp ash body from Guitar Mill and I'm torn between getting the same finish or a 50's two tone sunburst.

I often have this guitar set up as an Esquire and will likely do so again with the new body.

I like the Mary Kay quite a bit, but I also think sunburst 50's Esquires are super sexy too.

    Help me decide

... two tone SB with a black guard -- that's my Esquire!

I'd say Mary Kaye, but you've already got one, so I guess that means the answer is - Daphne Blue with a parchment guard.

Or the sunburst, if you insist. :)

I'd choose a Mary Kaye finish, but...

    Already got SB.
I like a green guard on sunburst, but "mint" and "green" guards vary quite a bit.
This one is 15-20 years old and has darkened quite a bit as it has a lighter color where a previous neck 22nd fret overhang shaded the guard.
The RW is Brazilian on a '64 Tele neck, not a color you can easily purchase.

I like the Mary Kay look... and my general rule is, anything but sunburst. Well, except silverburst and Antigua... but it’s not me you’ve got to please, so do whatever you like!

    Oh yeah the sunburst.
a Mary Kay finish on a Tele never was vintage correct anyway.

Oh! That is sexy! Love the creamy parchment looking pick guard.
To make matters worse, I was just on youtube watching a Jay Leonard J. video and he has what looks like a custom shop Tele in Lake Placid blue and it looks GOOD!

Thanks for the link! Will check out that thread.

Yeah.. I think the correct finish name is just "blonde", which is like a whiter version of a nocaster blonde - less yellow and more cream. From what I understand, a true Mary Kay was a very subtle blonde burst...

I don't like Mary Kay finishes. Looks too unfinished to me, like they didn't have enough time to do any more than a whitewash.

I am the lucky owner of two Fender Esquires, and cherish them both.

One, the more expensive, is a Custom Shop version; a 1955 replica finished in Sunburst. The other is a slightly modified Fender Classic Player '50s Esquire, finished with a gloss Black body and a white guard. This would be my preferred finish should I ever build or buy another Esquire.

It also replicates an early and rare Fender Esquire issue of the fifties. Note:While the Esquire that appeared in Fender’s 1950 catalog was black with a pinewood body, a see-through blonde finish on an ash body soon became standard.

My 50s Classic Esquire is also black, and I chose that color for the same reason, it matched the original pine Esquires, and also because it matched Clyde the Cat.

Looks great on whiteguards with maple boards.
