I recently picked up a used Chase Tone Red Velvet Fuzz, and I think it's terrific, new favorite fuzz. I started thinking about other Chase Tone pedals, so I went to his website. There's two intriguing pedals, another fuzz and a preamp, and unlike the Red Velvet they're still in production. Prices were very respectable, but on a lark I thought I'd scout Reverb for the same pedals.

At Reverb, every single listing (more than 20 offerings) for these two pedals is more expensive than it would be to order directly from Chase Tone, and some are substantially more expensive, the most egregious example being almost triple the cost of one ordered directly.

What am I missing here? Do the people who originally purchased these pedals and then put them on Reverb think everyone else is a moron who won't price check or scout out the manufacturer's own website? What on earth compels sellers to think they're going to get double or triple their money back on an item still in production? Why does Reverb permit this? I mean I understand free market systems to the extent that one can ask whatever they want, but Reverb doesn't have to permit such absurd pricing if it's going to diminish confidence in the platform. And to my mind allowing sellers to try to scam buyers like this does indeed cause one's confidence in the platform to fall, substantially.

    Any opinions?

That's why i always check new prices before buying off eBay and the like. Many times i have found the same thing
Let the buyer beware. Don't expect the site to cover you. I recently lost $200 buying off a Facebook ad. I ordered a guitar and got a tiny little toy guitar with no way to return
China direct no middleman No help

Also check Amazon, sometimes if your logged in with Amazon prime they jack the price up from non prime members to cover the "free" shipping. I was using my wife's computer to look at something, (logged on as her on her amazon prime account) when i went back to my computer the price was less

How long has the 3x$$ item been listed? How many watchers?

Builders like Chase Tone and AnalogMan have waiting lists/long lead times. You can pay the list price and wait, or the inflated used price and have it now.

I regularly buy and sell on Reverb and it could be anyone selling and the pricing can be all over the place for a variety of reasons.
The back order of items can jack up the price as the last guy said. I saw the same thing with the Spark amp, while the wait was 6 months, people who got them early had them up at double the price.
The other thing I see a lot is foreign shops will often have significantly higher prices on some American gear.
I always price check and 90% of the time I get the best price on reverb but here and there Sweetwater or Amazon will have a better deal.

I see a lot of used pedals on Reverb where the seller is asking above retail price (for pedals that are still in production and easily found).

    I don't get it.

It doesn't cost anything to list an item on Reverb (or Clist). That might have something to do with it!
Also there is the "See, honey, I DID list it for sale!" issue....

Beats me. I see this phenomenon in the guitar world all the time, from private listings to brick and mortar stores. So many listings where I could buy the item new for the about the same price. Someone must be buying!

I got a Chase Tone Secret Preamp a couple months ago. The shipping could not have been faster.

He must be overstocked because he is running a killer sale ($120!) right now. I ordered a secret preamp for $129 back in April and received it in June. They were listing on reverb for $180 at the time.

    Fantastic pedal, worth the wait.

Right. Not that complicated. Site says orders in queue will ship “now through mid to late January”. Not sure what that actually means for turnaround time.

So is this an “I want it now but don’t want to pay to get it now” scenario?

Reverb being a auctions site, people post for extra high prices cause they know they 'll have offers for much lower. Factor in the various fees they have to pay... I do think Reverb is going downhill anyway after Etsy bought them..

Why all the contortions rather than accept basic supply and demand.

I want it. Nay, I NEED it!! NOW!!!!!!!
