Wanna answer, "My own!" But the narcissism and possible depressiveness of that scares me. The ones that poured out of me during a wrenching divorce and the loss of six family members within two years sure were anguish-packed things, though. Even wrote three about parents losing a child, though that's not happened. I have to stare at the floor when I sing 'em or even play the chords or the feelings surge back. Talk about venting felt and dreaded pain. Definitely a blues addict here, without all the 7th chords.

But of others' songs...jeez, a LOT! So much true art is shaping pain into form to make that pain bearable, seems to me. (Not exactly a new observation, that, eh?)

    To pick just one:

But there's always this one, too:

Can we substitute "melancholy" for "sad," as the only music that truly makes me sad is stuff that lacks soul. Emotionally meaningless stuff. For as a wise man, who envied music as "the art of arts," once put it:

A little lesson for me in sad songs and context matters tonight. At the gig in the banjo set (I know, I know) I played The Beatles In My Life followed by Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and as I did I remembered that a friend in the audience lost her Dad just a few days before. She was crying. More than a little wrung out after a long week, she and her husband headed home. We all hugged - and I totally love these people - but I felt pretty bad. This is when the sad songs really hit you. "If you get there before I do. (Coming for to carry me home.) Tell them I am a-coming there too." No deep insights here. Just decompressing. My Dad died over 15 years ago; I still think about him every day.

    That's singing.
This album was like a course in fingerpicking for me when I was learning.

This has to be one of the most bizarre huge hits of the 50s. A happy go lucky melody that you could sing and have fun with at parties. Hmm,,,
