Forgive me if these have been posted.
The loneliness within me...takes a heavy toll...
'cause it burns as slow as whiskey through an empty aching soul...
and the night is like a dagger.....long and cold and sharp...
as I sit here on the front steps blowin' smoke rings in the dark....
I swear he wrote this for me....
Brokedown Palace - Grateful Dead
"Family Life" by The Blue Nile
+1 Smoke Rings in the Dark. That's a killer song.
This is one of my favorite old country sad songs, written and recorded by Hank Locklin in the late-40s. Lots of covers over the years but the Everly Brothers have the best IMO. From their 1963 album The Everly Brothers Sing Great Country Hits. Wrecking Crew folks mostly sitting in - Red Rhodes on pedal steel, Glenn Campbell and Billy Strange on guitar, Leon Russell on keys, and then country boy Bert Dodson on bass.

But just a memory's all that's left of you
Send me the pillow that you dream on
So darling I can dream on it too
Ben Gibbard, Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens spring to mind.
and my back is sore
from bending over backwards
to just lay the world at your door
With all the Ozzy’s vocals suck
posts I’m putting this out there ...
Going Down Slow
These came to mind:
Too many to list here, alas.
