A more recent "old" country heartbreak song. The song was recorded by Teddy Thompson* and Kelly Jones on their 2017 album, Little Windows, and written by Jones, Thompson and Bill DeMain. *Son of Richard & Linda Thompson.

Every night I close my eyes
    Broken dreams do passing by
    Don't remind me
    Don't remind me

At gigs I do one version of the traditional song, In The Pines, with voice accompanied by 5-string banjo. (There are dozens, even hundreds of variants of this ancient song. And, no, Kurt Cobain didn't write it; this comes up pretty regular.) The second verse always hits me; a simple lyric but feels like it covers everything:

Now the longest train that I ever saw
It was 14 coach cars long
And the prettiest girl that I ever knew
She was on that train and gone

I love the CCR sad songs like Lodi or someday never comes. So much energy that you don't realise how sad and full of emotion they are.

Another old country heartbreak song. Written by Dicky Lee and Steve Duffy - and first recorded by George Jones in 1962. Here, Teddy Thompson is on lead vocal as part of one of those Transatlantic Projects.

Just because I haunt familiar places
Where the memory of her lingers everywhere
Just because I'm not the happy guy I used to be
    She thinks I still care

Oh my bad, you'd have to be an admirer of Dinah to catch that, as she was known as the "Queen Of The Blues". Her first time in London she told the crowd, "…there is only one heaven, one earth and one queen…Queen Elizabeth is an impostor"

October Project's first album (self titled) is full of haunting melodies, lyrics and production. Here is a favorite heartbreaker for those times when I feel too optimistic and need to get to some deeper emotion for my own art.

And how could forget Pink Floyd's admonition in Time from Dark Side?!
Get off your ass and do something productive (me to me).
