It’s tempting to list dozens of songs or complete albums - I totally get that - but if it has to be one, it’s Cowgirl in the Sand - completely mysterious lyrics and it’s a song that seems as robust today as when I first heard it at the end of the 70s. I think the contemporary performances by Neil Young and his bands are fantastic…

Pretty pedestrian pick I guess, but it's one of the first songs I can remember knowing the words to, age four or so. Seemed like the whole record was on constantly in my house, or on the radio in the car.

And this one:

Pedestrian or not those are absolute bangers. Those albums werent in our house growing up, but still permeated because that's how classic rock radio worked. (ETA I think we actually did have Everybody Knows but I mostly remember hearing that one on cassette later on)
The sense of melancholic longing in H o G is almost hard to take, but the solid groove helps it go down. So damn good.

Heart of Gold was the first song I heard of his. Being a kid, newly to Canada, in the car driving in the Rocky Mountains, and this on the radio... the influence was massive and not just musically.

Great memories.

Several here have listed “Four Strong Winds”, and it certainly is appropriate that our Canadian friend Neil is among the over 100 artists who have covered this wonderful song. But let’s remember that Four Strong Winds was written by Ian Tyson and first recorded by Ian & Sylvia in 1963. Not sure I’d call it a Neil Young song as such.
