I do that on acoustic sometimes and think maybe I like it better without too much jumble around it.

Well, I had to do that opening theme. And, the little 3/maj7 back-and-forth at the end of the verses is too cool to leave out....

I like how your church does a couple of old familiar hymns (the first two) along with the others.

By now, most people probably consider "This Is Amazing Grace" an old familiar hymn.

Thanks for that.

Part of my worship theology is that everyone benefits when we mix cultures, styles, and ages. It keeps the sound from stagnating but more importantly reminds the church that we (and by "we" I mean 3500 years' worth of worshipers) are all one body strengthening each other. To that end we play new songs (or 10-year old ancient songs like the "This is Amazing Grace"), use truly ancient (4th century) poems set to recognizable tunes, and include country, rock, country-rock, blues, reggae-world beat, in with the traditional piano-driven 4-part hymns. The Pastor agrees with me and is happy to go along with telling people, "I'm not surprised you didn't really like that song; it's not your style. But thanks so much for singing along and ministering to the people in the congregation who love it!"

Busy, busy days with work and getting ready for Holy Week. We're going (mostly) old this Sunday!

Because of You (Paul Oakley, 1995)
Alas and Did My Savior Bleed (Isaac Watts, 1707)
Confessions (David Hardesty, 2022)
Grace Greater Than All Our Sins (Julia Johnston, 1910)

Plus we're rehearsing Kirk Franklin's Hosanna Forever for next week!

How about your congregation?

Jesus, lover of my soul
Lord, listen to your children praying
Calling out to You

-tINY

Jesus, lover of my soul,
Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high.
Hide me, O my Savior, hide,
Till the storm of life is past;
Safe into the haven guide;
Oh, receive my soul at last.

Here's the music from this past Sunday. I used to sing in the choir and had access to what was coming up. I wish I could still be an active part of the worship service, but they do well enough without me.
(Orchestra Prelude)Blessed Assurance

The Reason
Blessed Assurance
How Deep the Father’s Love for Us
Amazing Grace(My Chains Are Gone)

(Invitation Hymn) Amazing Grace(My Chains are Gone)

My wife likes to write down the names of the songs done during the worship service, so that's how I can post what they did.

I like those words... a bit older lyric than what we sang.

"A bit older lyric" by about 300 years I'd guess!

About 35 years ago I visited a church to fill in as worship leader. We had discussed a song list - this was when you made phone calls or sent letters - and they confirmed it. When I arrived they had printed everything up - this was when you used hymnals or song sheets instead of slides - but it turned out one classic, very well-known song I thought we were singing had somehow become a pop tune a pop tune I'd never heard (and honestly, never heard of again). I learned a lesson that day!

Anyway, here are a few more of Wesley's verses:

Jesus, lover of my soul,
let me to thy bosom fly,
while the nearer waters roll,
while the tempest still is high.
Hide me, O my Savior, hide,
till the storm of life is past;
safe into the haven guide,
O receive my soul at last!

Other refuge have I none;
hangs my helpless soul on Thee.
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
still support and comfort me.
All my trust on Thee is stayed,
all my help from thee I bring;
cover my defenseless head
with the shadow of thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want;
More than all in Thee I find;
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick and lead the blind.
Just and holy is thy name,
I am all unrighteousness;
Vile and full of sin I am,
Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with Thee is found,
grace to cover all my sin;
let the healing streams abound;
make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art;
freely let me take of Thee;
spring Thou up within my heart,
rise to all eternity.

I got to play this past Sunday. Was not expecting to, as I wasn't scheduled, got the message and songs Fri evening, two were new to me 😱

I Lift My Eyes
Taste and See
Heal Us Emmanuel
Hallelujah Praise Jehovah
Gloria Patri
Although We Are Weeping

After the sermon I blanked on the
Gloria Patri a momentary glitch🙄 The vocalist pointed to the last line on my sheet so I played it, then hit the opening chord and we sang it acapella 🎶🙂
