It is my contention that someone could make a career out of playing obscure Bob Dylan songs and claim they were originals.

Seriously tho, Dylan has so many wonderful songs that have been interpreted in so many ways... what are some of your favorite Dylan covers?

I love this version of Bill Kirchen doing Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues

Bonnie Raitt just kills it with this version of Million Miles

And Dave Alvin does a wonderful job on Highway 61 Revisited

Got any other favorite Dylan covers? And no, Knocking on Heavens Door by Guns & Roses doesn't count. :D

    Cheers

Edit oops meant to post this in the Music to your Ears forum, mods plz move if possible.

Makes me want to hurt myself.

The Band and Hendrix. Maybe those too are too obvious?

Almost anyone could do obscure Dylan songs, but not claim them as their own, and make a career out of it

I cover a lot of Dylan tunes. Sometimes I’ll do a whole set if people are enjoying it. With or without a band.

I thought Dylan songs we like to sing.
So, Isis, One more cup of coffee, Ballad in plain D, Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest; for a start.
More if I could remember names...

Tim O’Brien’s Red on Blonde album is pretty solid.

The I’m Not There soundtrack has some great, obscure Dylan covers too.

I have no idea who this young man is, but this cover came up on my youtube feed recently and I love his version. It is inspiring me to learn this song too.

I also like Kenny Wayne Shepherd's version of Everything Is Broken

And I was kidding of course about claiming obscure Dylan songs were originals.

The Band's cover of 'When I paint My Masterpiece'. You can't top Levon's voice.

    I regularly cover -

    Don’t Think Twice
    When I Paint My Masterpiece
    The Man In Me
Tonite I’ll Be Staying Here With You
    Lay Lady Lay
    She Belongs To Me
It’s All Over Now Baby Blue
    You Ain’t Going Nowhere
    Boots of Spanish Leather
    Tangled Up In Blue
    Shelter From The Storm
Rosemary, Lily, and the Jack of Hearts

I also cover his cover of the old tune “You Belong To Me” from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. And yeah, if somebody tips me really fat I’ll do Knockin On Heaven’s Door.

    My choice too.

I've been around long enough to remember the CBS campaign in the 60s

But I'll make an exception for Duluth resident Charlie Parr's version of Blind Willie McTell.

I know how to play a lot of early Dylan songs; at home, just the guitar playing ( fun way to keep my brain and hands active) It was a curiosity thing with me, to figure out the original ( close) guitar playing.
We perform some of the popular ones, but faves at home are:

You're No Good ( 1st song, first album)
It Takes a Train to Laugh...
    Gates of Eden
    A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall
    With God On Our Side
    Chimes of Freedom
    I Dont Believe You
    Rocks and Gravel

    * fun pickin' and strummin' songs!
