Before the internet became the common source of information, I spotted a classical guitar in a GC. It looked boutique level to me. Just the makers name, town, and state on the label. I took a chance and made a straight up trade for a 16 series Martin I had, probable used retail value $800 at the time. I took the classical home and called 411. Called the maker and he said he sells that model for $3,500. Now it sells for about 6 G.

I bought a $925 strat at full price from a large retailer. A couple weeks later I saw it advertised for 15% less and called them to get that discount retroactively, since I was still well within the return period. They said OK, no problem, we’ll refund the 15% to your credit card. But they screwed up and refunded 85% instead of 15%. I tend to be an honest and ethical sort and I called them to alert them to this error. I got a kid on the phone who was clearly confused by the situation, but thanked me for calling and said he’d take care of it. But it was never changed. I figured I’d done the right thing by alerting them to their mistake, but I didn’t feel obligated to continue to chase them down to correct it.

So I ended up with a $925 strat for a little less than $140. And it’s been my number one guitar for the past couple of years. I just upgraded and now it’s essentially a great backup to a higher end strat type guitar, but I expect to keep this guitar for a good long time...

A Yamaha G100 212 amplifier. Got it for free as the owner was going to throw it away because it wouldn't switch on. Fixed in 5 minutes after cleaning up the corroded fuse holder.

I just picked up a Pathfinder 15R for $40 the day before Christmas. Got it to scratch a general GAS itch, and I figured worst case scenario I could flip it and break even. I doubt I will ever sell the amp. It sounds too good.

    Hi.

This guitar, a MIJ Fender Tele with the awkward name of “Japan Exclusive Classic 60s Telecaster USA Pickups” listed anywhere from around 80,000 - 90,000 yen (US$727 - 818-ish) in 2017 when I bought it new. They go second hand now for about ¥63,000 / $573. I bought it for ¥30,000 (US$273-ish).

And the Vox AC4HW1 amp also shown listed around 80,000 yen new (US$727-ish) when I bought it used in 2018, also for ¥30,000.

Man y'all got some good deals!

My best was my '73 SFTR loaded with 2 Altec 417s that I paid $400 for. Silverface Twins have never been all that pricey, but the speakers alone nearly justify the price.

If I told you how little I paid for this pristine, unplayed 10 year-old National, I would appear...….immodest.

I was into the Craigslist thing a few years ago. My best scores were my '99 MIM Standard Strat for $150, my 1982 Fender Bassman 135 head for $100, and a set of Aspire Congas for $75 that I used for a while and then sold for $175.

Ended up I'm not very good at flipping because I like the stuff too much and end up keeping it.

Yep, the 1x12 is heavier than a Twin Reverb. 72 lbs and oversized bulky cabinet.

To date, the best one was probably the Fralin VVT 1x15 Combo that I bought for $800...just a month old. The owner special ordered some upgrades but sold it after receiving a terminal illness diagnosis. As bad as that sounds, I made the deal prior to knowing about his medical situation. At the time, it had only been on the market for about 6 months and the previous owner placed the order right after it was released.

Remains my go-to amp outside the house.

An early block-logo MXR Phase 90–with the original box and booklet—for $20...still on my pedalboard...

    A brand-new-in-the-box 1990 Fender ‘63-reissue Vibroverb bought in 1992 for $500...still my #1 amp

A 1971 Fender Mustang Bass for $99, which I flipped that afternoon for $450 (a good price in 1998)...my wife was so happy when I gave her that $100 profit I made...

An early Fender Bassman Ten for $175...it was my main amp for years. I sold it for $650...I wish I had it back, except for the weight!

A 1950’s Airline archtop acoustic at a garage sale for $1...I later retrieved the penny rattling around in it, so my full cost was 99c

An early Analogman Sunface fuzz for $100...sold it for $650+

An early Prescription Electronics pedal for $150 that I sold for $475 (I could/should have gotten more, but had bills...)

A Danelectro DC-3 Pro for $99, later sold for $450...

A Silvertone 1843 amp head for $100, sold for $450...

Music Man HD 130 head - free, sold for $250

Magnatone 260a amp - $1 - cleaned up, tube work, used a while, sold for $450

Yamaha G50 amp $25, still have it

So that's three amp examples,, Music Man, Magnatone, and Yamaha for $26 total. Not bad.
