For the last couple weeks my wife has been talking about buying a plot of land on the moon. She read about it somewhere and last night went ahead and did it. You can pick your property with the views that you want, in the neighborhood you want etc...... She tells me that over 7% of the moon is privately owned and that we would neighbors like Mick Jagger and other celebrities. She is now considering lots on both Mars and Mercury. Can anybody explain this to me. This is a little too much for my little pea brain.

Well, the good thing is no HOA will show up and get on your case about maintaining the property.

    So there's that.

Other than that, it's bat-crap crazy. No offense intended.

It's like those companies that will name a star after you or a loved one. For a fee.

    Of course.

Just think...if it's legal than NASA would just eminent domain to land there. Mining Companies would just do the same. There's no way to beat the Overlords.

If it is cheap let her have fun (see section 1 "happy wife happy life") if not make sure you get the water and mineral rights too.

I'd like to see how you'd deal with squatters.

    Lemons vs lemonade.

Clearly there is a market for proper scamming. Start an MLM, timeshare scheme, or whatever. You don't have to agree on what it all means. You just have to make it all work for you and your marriage. You're welcome. I can take venmo and vintage amps.

I hope she's not spending a lot of money on these scammy things. Even IF it were possible, there's no one alive today that would ever be able to take advantage of it.

Wow, what are the taxes like? I guess you don't have to worry about neighbors' noise complaints, since sound waves don't travel in a vacuum, so that's a plus. Long commute for me and spotty wifi I would guess.

If she paid $10 and got a really cool certificate, sure. Cool novelty talking piece.

    If not, well,

So, who supposedly "owns" the moon that can sell property? According to the article linked above, nobody does own the moon so nobody can sell plots.

How much did she spend? For $20 I might buy a piece of paper claiming ownership of a tract, just as a keepsake to frame for conversation.

Huh? The folks selling the plots are definitely taking advantage of it.

Think of it this way. The type of person who would even think living on the moon would be fun and exciting is the type of person that has "please scam me" emblazoned on their forehead.

If it were a scam that never worked we wouldn't be here talking about it.

The weather on Mercury sucks. Jagger isn’t going to have a vacation home there.

Righto! I think we're sayin' the same thing. I mean even if someone could legit buy a plot on the moon, big deal... there's no one alive today that could ever use it - hence the scam ;)

But the website says they've been selling land on the moon for decades. How could this be a scam?
