First of all, this is what I have…
My new Guitar stool, 11-10-15.jpg

I got this 5 years ago so I could gig sitting down. I’d had a heart attack and bypass surgery, and once I started back to gigging, I found I could no longer stand for the entire time. This chair has/had features I liked: comfortable seat, lower back support, adjustable height, and it swiveled. The only downside at the time was its weight. It was manageable, but a bit heavy.

Well, after being used several times weekly since I bought it, the chair is worse for the wear. There was a lever for height adjustment, but it’s come off, and the spot where the lever attached to adjust the height of the shaft is inaccessible due to welding underneath the seat. I’ve tried to force it down, but it doesn’t stay put, and so now it consistently sits up so high my feet can’t touch the floor if I wanted to, without sliding forward to edge of the seat. So I feel like Edith Ann in her rocking chair.

Also problematic is the chair now swivels on its own. It tends to turn toward the left, and during performance I find myself facing the left side of the room. More than once I’ve quipped to my audience, “I’m not trying to ignore half of you, this chair just leans toward the left. That’s not a political statement; it’s just what the chair is doing.” To compensate, I’ve sat kind of sideways in the seat, which defeats the purpose of lumbar support. Or else I slide forward to the edge of the seat just to be able to touch the floor and re-position it.

And one other problem is the weight. No, it hasn’t gotten heavier, but I’m aging even worse than the chair. I have a torn bicep on each arm, so I guess I don’t have biceps anymore, but uniceps.:twisted: Consequently, loading this chair in and out of my SUV and in and out of gigs is a pain, sometimes literally.

So, I’m looking for a replacement. I’d like it to have lumbar support or at least some kind of back to it, and it needs to be lightweight, and a folding chair of some kind, one that can easily be stowed away in a travel trailer. (I have a little camo folding stool which I’ve used on camping trips so far, and it’s okay for playing an acoustic by a campfire at night, but it sits too low—barely more than a foot of the ground—and wouldn’t work for gigs.)

I’ve thought about just a plain old metal folding chair, but what would y’all recommend?

Thanks. Not bad. I was a little surprised by the price, though. I kinda like it, but I'm not sure I like it for $75. I didn't pay that much more for the chair pictured above, which is much more substantial. Seems a bit much for a folding chair for which the only distinguishing feature is height adjustment. But maybe that's the going price for what I'm after, and I just need to wrap my head around what I should expect to pay.

I use a piano bench for wide glides :) no backs and sides to ding ya guitar up on .. I liked my wood chair but seems like every time I got up I would wack my guitar somewhere on it.

I think this one might be worth a look...a little pricey...

...or what about a regular folding chair (for a card table)...there are padded and unpadded, often on sale for ~$30.

Yeah, that Redneck thing appeals to me. I haven't studied it closely yet, so with just a cursory glance I can't tell how it's designed to swivel, but I'll take their word for it. Also pricey, but again, it looks like $75-$100 is what I should expect to pay.

And I did say in my OP that I was willing to consider a plain old metal folding chair, but I'm hoping for better.

Getting the foot rest or ground height right is very important for your posture. Having adjustments for this is a plus. Otherwise it is hit or miss and you may end up with an uncomfortable chair.

I have this exact item and it is very good.
Right height for practice or play, adjustable back.
Good item.

I have a similar model, the OnStage one that doesn't have the back rest but is otherwise the same. I find it far too high even though I'm 6'0". Next time I'll buy one that is adjustable so I can get my posture dialed.

It looks to me that only the seat swivels (180) while the back remains stationary. Looks like there may be some height adjustment on the legs. The reviews indicate it is a bit heavy--not aluminum. Cheers!
