If a Tele is a LP Lite, then I’ll take this Tele Heavy.

A Strat or a 335 (or a decent spinoff of either).

Stratocaster. I came late to electric guitar, bought my first one in July of 2008. A tele, of course.

But earlier that year, as my search began, I thought I wanted a Strat. Cool looking guitar, and so many greats played them. So I borrowed a friend's Strat for a couple of weeks, and found out that it was wrong for me. The Volume control knob positioned right up against the bridge pickup, the selector switch in the path of where I wanted to strum, etc. Then I played my first tele, and I knew.

If in this bizzaro world scenario of no teles, I supposed I would have tried harder to make a Strat work for me.

Probably a Ric 620. It’s somewhere between a Tele, SG, and 360. PITA to change strings on Rics, but they’re great guitars. I have 620, which I don’t play nearly enough and should probably sell, but it looks and sounds amazing.

    What a funny thread.
The closest thing to a tele is a strat.

That’s awesome! All I’ve got is my Tele and my Mustang. After buying the Mustang my GAS went away completely!

This is a tough question! I've had to ponder this thread for a little while before attempting to answer.

In forty years of playing I've only owned one electric guitar that wasn't a T style. My first electric was a Fender copy--Mustang or Jaguar, I can't recall.

If we're allowed to keep it in the Fender family, then I guess a Strat. Maybe I could learn to keep from accidentally hitting the pickup switch while playing.

Otherwise, there are a couple smaller hollowbodies that interest me. Like a 339 (thanks Joan Jett ) or maybe a Midtown.

The truth is, I don't know much about electric guitars other than Telecasters!

Paul McCartney speaking of his Epiphone Casino:

“If I had to choose one electric guitar, it would be this...”

    I agree.

I think Gretsch make the prettiest guitars (I don’t own one, never have). Sonically, though, there’s only ever been the Tele/Esquire that really hit me in the gut.
