I’m putting together a shortlist of speakers for my 1x12 Cab;
anyone has one of these?
No, but I'll tell you what has kind of displaced EVM12L's for me. I have a pair of Eminence Commonwealths in a open 2x12. It's right in between an EVM12L and a JBL D120F. It's been discontinued, but the Eminence Paul Franklin PF-350 is the same speaker except with a paper dust cone, which I'd probably like even more.
i’ll try to find one. What does a paper dust cone does to the tone? Sorry speaker newb here.
Well, the aluminum dust cone is stiffer than paper, and that makes the highs a more shrill. At least, that's always been the popular wisdom about them.
So, some people replace the aluminum cones with paper, but then they don't get the "ooh, you have JBLs in your cabinet" look that the aluminum cones give - back when that was a thing.
Ive seen the PF-350 demo, I have an idea on how it sounds, but not sure if thats what Im going to get with my set up..
Man, i'm having a harder time choosing which speakers to put into my 1x12, than choosing overdrives. LOL
Know anyone with an old SS Peavey, who might let you borrow a Scorpion 12 just to see if you like it? Scorpion 12s can flap some pants with high wattage. To my ear they do the high headroom, loud and clear thing really well, and they are tough, and they are underrated.
The Scorpion 12 in my 150-watt SS Peavey 1 x 12 combo does not suffer from any kind of early fart out, and that’s in an open-back cab.
I haven't seen any Scorpion speakers yet here.. Im a fan of Blue Marvel and Scorpion speakers actually. and I like Peaveys.. the old Peavey amps I see here have Blue Marvel speakers, and Id have to buy the whole amp to get just the speakers.. which sometimes cheap, or expensive than buying an Eminence Swamp Thang..
I have two amps, a 25w and a 50w, so the higher watt rating is more preferred so I can use just one cab for both.
I have had some large EV speakers in history.
Cleans are always great but you will never get
the early breakup sound since they are so dynamic.
Now with a 100w marshall head., ok....lol
There's now the Eminence EM12N, reputedly a neodymium version of the EVM12L :
If it behaves the same as the EVM12L, its great advantage is the lightweight !
I haven’t used the WGS version yet, usually their speakers are very good and slightly different sounding than the originals al lot of times in a good way. I have 2 original EVM12L’s with the oversized heat sinks on the magnets. I also have the Eminence Deltapro 12’s and the Eminence DeltaLites, which are EVM like. They sound similar using the same box. The EVM12L’s have a little more upper midrange. I also tried them in a 2X12 partial open back as well as a 2X12 closed back and performed good, but more mids than I wanted and no speaker breakup.
I also built a full sized Thiele cabinet, made for the 12L’s and it fills out the sound balance much better with all 3 ports open. I also built a closed back 2X12 similar in size to a Marshall 1936 cabinet and incorporated 2 Aerovent ports for the Deltalites and that cabinet sounded great and it was much lighter. That cabinet with the 2 Deltalites worked great for guitar and bass. I built it with the mindset of using a modded Bassman 50, 1 side I designed for bass and the other side for guitar, for a customer and it really does the job.
The Aerovents are available from Parts Express.
I have a Scorpion sitting on a shelf. It came in my '70 Deluxe Reverb, and came out of it when I converted the DR to 2X10 JBL D110Fs. I tested it a week or so ago, and it's working. It's yours for $25 and shipping, if you want.
I am in Melbourne Australia though, that would be around $70-80 shipping alone. Hehe
What I'm not sure of is Im putting this in a semi-open/ 1/3 open back cabinet..
I'm not sure whats the response is going to be like.
I had a setup for a short while with 2x12 EVM12L’s with my JVM 410H. It had a lot of mids and reasonable low end. Th cabinet had a 5” opening in the back about 28 inches long. It basically reproduced the amplifier sound and little to no breakup of the speakers. As I mentioned earlier, I now have in of them in a TSL806 cabinet. Being I like a thicker sound for my SG I like all 3 ports open. it goes down a little deeper and has more mid bass. I would think the WGS version might be a little nicer and they probably took an evaluation on how they have been used over the last 40 years and let the speaker work in different cabinet scenarios.
Thanks for this! I might just take a risk on these speakers.. However, I may not buy the WGS12L as Ive found an EVM12L Black label locally.. If I dont like it, I think the re-sell would be a lot better anyway..
Have not tried those, but I have seen variants of the EVm12L and ALtecs on Ebay for crazy cheap lately. Some Apogee 200w 12in drivers with EV style cast frames, some nice newer FANE 200w. ALtec er-12S as well..
i will check them out! The thing is, I’m in Australia!
