Alnico magnets are usually smaller and in the center of the magnet structure. That must be the exterior steel magnetic structure, seems odd though. Looked at their other alnicos, they look the same.

Played one through a Fender Japan Tweed Champ (though it’s too big to properly install in a classic-sized 5f1) and in a 1976 Vibro Champ. Sounded glorious through both. Loud, full, rich and a bit brighter than the Weber 8A125, which I also love.

Anyone looking for a great 8” speaker should have it on their list to check out.

Reviving the old thread. I just bought this for my 57 Champ RI. It barely fits inside and I think the magnet is too close to the power tube. It literally touched the tube socket retainer. I think it affected the tube in a way my amp started to be very hot, the chassis was like a frying pan. When I put back my previous speaker Weber CVA8 it didn't get hot anymore, just bit warm as usual. Just my observation.. I think if I would remove the pad on the speaker's rim, there might be enough distance from the tube, but I didn't want to test it :)

Pics or it didn't happen ;)

PS: CVA8 is a perfect match for 57 Champ!

Glad you got it sorted out! I had a similar problem trying to install a replacement speaker in my Bassbreaker 15 combo. I tried a vintage alnico I had and there was no way. I also tried an Eminence Reignmaker and it was close, but I ended up leaving the V Type in it.

It was a tight fit, the big magnet was very attracted to the chassis. ;-) Very magnetic relationship.

But I have removed G8A and installed CVA8 again. I know G8A was not broken yet, so with time the sound should improve. It was not bad at all, for sure I could feel more presence from it and due the larger magnet it would keep up better when the amp would be very loud. Probably it is also more efficient. But I was afraid of doing some harm to my amp or the power tube. Also when I put CVA8 back I realized how great sounding this speaker is and that I want to keep it there. I play my champ usually around Vol 4 and my tele volume rolled down and this is where CVA8 excels.

Wow! That's a beefy looking 8"! I use a '56 Magnatone Triplex that has a 15 and an 8. That would probably be killer. WGS is out of them so if you decide to sell I know a guy looking for one.

Very interesting speaker! Just curious about how it compares to a Jensen P8R!
I had the WGS G8C 4-ohms in my champ (a great choice for that amp), but I later replaced it with an 8-ohms Alnico Jensen P10R (in search of a wider headroom).

Jupiter has the same speaker and their website has some specs that are not on the WGS website. I have the wgs g8a and it is the brightest 8” sounding speaker I’ve owned from lowest to brightest Celestion Super 8, Weber 8vf, Vox PF Bulldog, PMR G5 hemp, Rolla/Heppner alnico, then the WGS g8a.

Replace the retainer with the more compact springs. Loudspeaker contact vibrations can destroy a power tube. Nothing will happen with a magnet.

You might also be able to create a new baffle board with the speaker rim attached to the outside of the baffle. That vould give a bit more clearance.

I think Jensen P8R would sound bit more thin and bit ear piercing. I had it in the champ for a while (it was not much broken-in though) and compared to stock Weber Sig8 (smooth cone) it was less pronounced in lower mids and much more pronounced in highs. I had similar experience with P6V in Champ 600 RI. On the other hand I used P10R in Pro Jr. and later in 68 Custom Princeton and it was awesome speaker. When I sold both Pro Jr and 68 CPR, I put back original speakers and still keep this P10R for some future use :)
