First paddle of 2021!! We were going to store our kayaks in the marina across the street, despite the cost, because if they’re easy to use, we use them more. Sadly, they filled up long before paddling season. Stupid (that which cannot be named)!

Anyway, we took advantage of a spectacular day to toss them on the car, plunk them in the water, and paddle about for a few hours. Nothing special, just watched eagles, seals, and herons, and had a wonderful time.

Oh, and the distant haze cleared enough to see Mt. Baker. Always nice to see a volcano in the distance.

In case you wonder, the pictures with a blob floating in the water are of a harbour seal. There were a few of them around, and it’s rare that they don’t slip under water just as you click the shutter.

I love kayaking! Despite my bad knees ... Getting into and out of the boat? UGH! I kayak on a river populated by red-winged black birds. They dive-bomb me repeatedly during nesting season!

I had the same problem, plus I couldn’t sit too long ( because of an old tailbone injury).

I bought a stand up paddleboard. Problem solved.

Never been bird-attacked in my kayak (although the sea lions have given me cause to worry), but I was attacked by a crow on my bicycle. And you should be glad it’s not arctic terns. We walked past their nesting sites, and they drew blood on my co-worker Karin’s head.

Glad it worked out for you. Personally, I stand enough in my life. For me, sitting down on the water is worth any creakiness when I get out of the boat after a couple of hours.

I really miss sea kayaking. Lots of fun exploring. The seals would dive just as you approach them and then pop their heads out after you glided over them. I also enjoy watching sea otters play. Sea lions always seemed imposing looking down at us and barking from a rock outcropping, but never once had one charge us.

Cars look so much more fun with kayaks on top. Maybe just leave them there.

We love paddling. My kid even works at a rowing dock part time. I built some rigging in the garage to get them up more easily. On long days of conference calls you'll find me on the creek or lake here.

Oh, some great oysters out there along the sound.

First time I saw big numbers of sea lions in the water, I stayed back and watched (don’t get me started about people who approach wildlife) until a young one flew completely out of the water between me and the group that I thought I was staying politely back from. I backed off farther, and when I got home, I did a google search for “sea lions attack kayakers.” It turns out they don’t (unless you have fish aboard), but they certainly will hang around and try to be intimidating. Seals just bob in the water and look at you. Most important thing to remember? Sea lions are grizzlies with flippers. Change my mind.
