Letters to Cleo did a cover of I Want You to Want Me for the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. It is a "good" studio cover. But compared to Live at Budokan, it lacks sooooo much mojo. Often times it's not just the song hook that makes it memorable, but the context of the recording. We first heard the song live - it's part of the song texture. Hearing a studio version of it just doesn't have the same feel, IMO.

I think if Letters to Cleo would have not tried to emulate the original as much, they could have made it work better. They also did Nick Lowe's Cruel To Be Kind. Good, but still trying to emulate the original. The newer production loses a lot in the translation, IMO.

I never appreciated what a great song Born to Run is until I heard Jim Boggia do it in ukulele.

I'd like to hear "Oh! Darling" done by Fats, and "Rain" done by REM, and "Helter Skelter" done by Link Wray

Chandelier has about 200K amateur covers on YouTube, it really works well when done by a guy... I’d like for someone to revisit the song, consider:

Ever since I learned that Bruce Springsteen had written "Hungry Heart" for the Ramones, I have longed to hear a Ramones version. Since they're dead now, I'd settle for a Ramones-esque version.

Others: I would have loved to hear the Squirrel Nut Zippers do a cover of the Pretenders' "Don't Get Me Wrong."

This one is poor timing & I'm sure to touch a few nerves, but here goes.

Anything from Rush to be preformed by anyone but Rush. As a Canadian I've been told so many times I should like this band but I can't & it's not the songs. It's Geddy & Alex. Neil I loved.

I never liked Geddy's voice or Alex's guitar tone. The songs are good but for me un-listenable

There was a pop machine in high school that played the drum intro to that song. Every time it dispensed a can of soda, as the can tumbled down into the chute it sounded exactly like that drum intro

    Geddy's voice, I get.

Alex's guitar tone? What's not to like there?

Can you give us examples of instances that you found particularly grating with this (so we can then tell you how you're just wrong:))?

AC/DC doing the theme from “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood”

no joke: we used to mashup the music from “Back In Black” with the lyrics from “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”
    It made the drunks laugh.

Another one we did was a punk version of the “Three’s Company” theme song...we did this the first time on the day John Ritter died (the same day Johnny Cash died, too...we did three JC songs that night).

I’d like to hear Waylon do AC/DC’s “Ride On”

Lol. I knew this day would come.

I'm no master of tone. I just know I like mine & don't like his.

Being as I'm not a fan of the band I certainly have not heard the majority of their work. So my opinion is based on the songs that are most requested on the radio & I assume these are the songs fans like the best.

I like having effects on hand but find I rarely actually use anything other than overdrive. I use things like chorus and delays very sparingly. I'm not a signal purist by any means but don't like "over produced" guitar sounds.

What's funny about that sentence from me is that one of my favorite amps was the Johnson Millennium. Over time I found all I ever used on that amp was clean & overdriven.

My current set up has a phaser on all the time but at a level no one knows it's there.

I used to think that – and there of course some classic cover versions – but I now think that his originals are largely better – especially the pre-1975 era material. I might give you Joan Baez's version of Sad-Eyed Lady but the rest of Blonde on Blonde is a brilliant album as performed by Dylan, and I'd always take the original versions of anything from Highway 61 revisited and Blood on the Tracks over any covers.

Ain't that the best brokenhearted song ever? The way her Mom dismisses him just kills me
