Sparky 2 You are not alone in this. Many People are navigating the highways and by ways of alcohol. Some of us ( ME ) have eliminated the troublesome aspects of having a drink. I find that not drinking works for me and has worked for me for 37 year ( one day at a time).
Are you alone from the existential perspective? Ask Camus or Sartre, possibly Suzuki Roshi, I suffer from a long list of alienating emotional " arrangements ". The old question is no longer in the active case file , It's me. The sticker on my mirror says
"YOU ARE SHAVING THE PROBLEM": just to help clarify the internalized self accusation and guilt.

It'll be fifteen years for me next month. As goofy as life has been the past four or five months, it's NOTHING compared to the insanity I subjected myself to in my younger years.

My wife asked me to quit drinking on 3May11 so I did.
First few years were really tough but then it got much much better.
I’m so grateful she cares enough to talk to me about it.
I’m enjoying my life more than I ever could have done as a drinker.

Now that my body isn’t inured to alcohol, I really can’t handle it. A couple of months ago I decided to treat myself to a really nice pale ale—my first drink in about a year—and I got through about half of it before deciding I was gross and bloaty and woozy enough, and I woke up at 2 belching it up. Hoo wee, party time.

I've been without a drink in my hand for long enough that I can't remember when I stopped. I don't miss it a bit. It doesn't bother me when others around me drink. I just don't. That's a good place to be.

    I am an alcoholic.
I am thankful and fortunate enough to have 9 years and 2 months.
    I could stumble today.
    I could stumble tomorrow.
Not drinking is the prerequisite to my personal sobriety.
It seems almost too simple, but when I do not drink, I give myself a chance to maintain my sobriety and work my problems out. Just a chance.
    If I drink, that disappears.
Drinking destroys more than it solves.
Sobriety means that there is a chance to solve something. Just a chance.
I bear the brunt of being the cause of great personal losses of relationships, employment, and possessions due to my own self destruction and alcoholism.
There _are_ those fortunates who can have a drink or two, and still maintain their sobriety. They should be very thankful that they are "Not An Alcoholic". Seriously.
I have had to learn the hard way that I _am_ an alcoholic, and not a, "Not An Alcoholic".
I'm just an alcoholic. A flawed being.
I cannot judge the quantity or quality of anyone else's sobriety.
There has been more than one successful method or motivation for a person to achieve and maintain their sobriety.
What motivates an individual, and keeps them from drinking on a day by day basis, is between them, and their personal Higher Power.
    Everyone's life is unique.

I've got enough drama going on w/o adding to it by cracking a cap off.
The zoom mtgs have added time to my day that I would have spent walking to church basements.
Life has not gotten perfect, but I'm making things less hard for myself.
    So, it's a good trade.
I'll have another 24 and welcome anybody who wants into the lifeboat.

    Peace - Deeve

Two or three beers. Not 8-14. In my 20's, it could have been 8-14. In my mid-30's, 2 or 3.

As a program guy, I rarely get a chance to talk about drinking - and not drinking -with so many people on different parts of the spectrum of drinking behavior as we have here.

Mostly I only get into the subject with other people who did enough damage and felt out of control enough to turn to an outside group and look for help getting their groove back.

I sometimes forget that there are a lot of other ways to be about it. I really appreciate the postings everyone is putting up here.

    This is nice.

as a program guy, it's good to see you are open minded enough to see that you remember that in the end we all basically want the same thing. I know about outside groups and stuff , it worked for me one day at a time on a daily basis. For this gift I am grateful.

Stopped in October of 1980. Don't miss it at all. I really love hearing about other players that also stopped. Sometimes you feel like you're the only one.
