Ok, you come to TDPRI to solve all problems, have questions answered. Right?

Two things about me, first( habits):

    - I drive a lot, get gasoline 2-3 times a week- rather than fill up the tank, I do a $10 or $15 thing. ( don't ask why)

    - I check my Bank App on my phone all day long, every day ( just an OCD thing)

So this has been happening for maybe 5 or 6 months now, and I'm not sure if it's only this ONE 7/11 gas station in my City...

( there are 4-5 favorite 7/11, Sheetz, or Sunoco stations I go to, depending which way I'm exiting the area...)

...but when I go to pump gas, I use my Bank debit card at the pump, get my $10, $15 at the pump ( sometimes it's $10.10, or $15.10 when I miss my mark to shut-off, so I put in 10 cents more/even number)

So yesterday, I go to this 7/11 ( frequent one) and get my $15, only I went to $15.10 as I went past $15...

So an hour later, I check my Bank app, and it reads $15.11! An extra penny.
This is maybe the 10th time now.

The first and second times this happened ( $10.01, $15.01) months ago I figured I overshot by a penny.

But since then I make sure, and I'm not off. I'm being accurate.
I'm being ripped off a penny?
It's like Peter's scheme, in 'Office Space!'
Only happening at the 7/11 (s)

    * it's not like that penny disappears from my bank balance after a few days.
And, this does not happen every time.

Any ideas? ( pump read-out display, off, not calibrated)

Silly subject, but just on my mind.

I had a pump running a couple weeks ago, and it would not shut off.
It was cold so I was getting warm on the other side of the island..so I did not see.
Holy crap...lake of gasoline...I told the mgr, and they said thanks.
drove by later..and do not think they locked it down.

I used to work As it director for a major chain. The first dip is what’s called a pre-auth, it hits the bank and validates balance/card validity. That also enables the customer to start fueling almost immediately. The refund 1cent bounce is just the way their IT people have set it up.

So it was still going when you left station?

ever see 'The Birds' ? ( one of my fave movies, with scary gas pump scene)

    Thanks,
But, I'm not sure I understand

It's not like I get that penny overshoot credit back on my account right? It is subtracted and stays that way.

( I actually keep a running 'paper trail' of my bank accounts on legal pads)

    * btw I'm not upset about the penny, just curious

I never use debit at pump. Too many chances of bad things happening. I use credit and Apple Pay where it's accepted. Apple Pay, Samsung/Google Pay are far more safe means of paying nowadays. Almost all newer smartphones, smart watches have the feature.
    Never had extra cents added.
With credit cards it sometime first posted as a $1 but then it converts to the actual amount.

I could never prove it, but in years past, I've had my bank fraud ( unauthorized purchase/ charge) to my Bank debit cards, and I think the numbers were 'skimmed' at one or two local Exxon gas station pumps- so I never even go there any more

Yeah, we did notice some irregularities over in Finance...

Getting back on-topic though, don't forget that gas station price signs always have that stupid "9/10" at the end so if you're filling up at $3.19, it's really $3.199 ($3.20 is what they really mean, keep it real), unless you're getting ~$100 in fuel you're not going to notice it, but the fuel management system at the station sure will. If it stops at let's say $45.105, you'll only see the first two digits after the decimal on the pump but they'll be more than happy to round up on you.

Nope, never noticed. I have noticed more than a few places putting a pending charge of $100 for a $20 buck gasoline purchase. The $100 goes away after a few days, but nevertheless they seem to want to know I am good for the money before I get any gasoline.

As for using my debit card at a gas pump, that is a big No. I have had credit card numbers skimmed before which causes enough trouble in getting those changed.

If I use a Debit card at a gas pump and someone decides to drain my bank account, that is my problem, not the bank's.

Here's something that I noticed years ago and have always wondered about... maybe it's nothing and totally off base.

    But:

Gas was always advertised (I believe it still is) as, hypothetically, $2.27 and 9/10 (of a cent) a gallon.

Do we pay 9/10 of a cent or a full 1 cent? In other word $2.28 a gallon?

If we pay the full 1 cent it means, I think, we lose 1/10 of a cent every gallon.

On the surface, it wouldn't be much... maybe 2 full cents a fill up.

But, if you look at the BIG PICTURE, i.e thousand and thousands of people filling up, everyday, every week, all year...

... it could mean that somebody is getting, potentially, a lot of free $$$$$.

    I can't even look anymore!

38 gallon tank and full time RV'er on the road. It's ~$100 to fill up....

That's a good scam though! Only 1¢ but add it up......

BTW WHY do they still do that 9/10¢ nonsense? Why'd they ever do that?

I would not be using debit having had a card theft traced to a gas station, knowing the industry's problems with skimmers, and even sizable store/outlet/station groups not addressing PCI DSS compliance.

Unfortunately there seems to be a huge lack of Apple Pay available for buying gasoline. The pandemic has upped my driving a lot but fortunately still not as much as so many do. Now I have a car that gets much better mileage and I look forward to my first battery powered car.

So you can only buy gas in even dollar values or 10 cents over.
And you buy it from 7-Eleven?
All evens at 2 prime numbers? I know you’re breaking some kind of rule doing that.
    Drive safely.
