Weber has just released a new amp kit called the "Maggie", which at first glance appears to be a very close approximation of the Two-Stroke amp as described in Dave Hunter's "Guitar Amp Handbook":

https://taweber.powweb.com/store/kits_weber.htm#Maggie

Sure you can always source it yourself, but if you're just getting into building (especially if you're getting into it through DH's book) this is a handy thing to have available. I know if this had been available two years ago it's what I would've ordered instead of the 5f2a.

Edit: Well, I just noticed that it's a single 6L6 rather than 2 parallel 6v6's, but that was always one of the config options.

Just got Hunter's book with an eye toward building a two-stroke, but I want to build the 2-6v6 model. I'll probably source the parts myself; looks I can get everything from Weber and AES.

Weber's kit is $480 and Victoria's is $1000! Victoria's is also a 1x12.

Dave initially had Weber source the parts for his 2 stroke. The Weber chassis never was punched for 2 power tubes however. I think that's a great price for that kit. However I don't see much difference between it, the Lauren, and the 5F2. FWIW I've built a Lauren and and a Weber 2 stroke back when Dave Hunt used Weber parts.

That is a pretty good price. Will Weber let you substitute parts on these kits? I'm thinking specifically of the the OT and the speakers.

you'll notice the "ala carte" designation on the right of the screen. You will get a discount by leaving out the speakers and the transformers. You could always email CJ and see if he'll give a discount on speakers. The Mercury and Heyboer transformers Weber sells have never been discounted as far as I know.

Well even at $40 - $45 a piece, Weber Sig12 and Sig12S are pretty unbeatable value for money, and perfect for this type of amp.

More expensive speakers are going to be nicer for sure. But the Sigs are great value for money and it depends how much dosh you want to spend on a little SE amp.

Here's the schematic from he Weber site. One question - What do you think about moving the NFB connection from the OT secondary's top lead to the pole on the impedance switch? That way the feedback would be taken off whichever OT tap is being used.
Anyone heard this circuit compared with the stock 5f2A?

I think The FB circuit is specific to the secondary impedence. It will sound different if you use it on a different tap. That may be okay, as long as you like it.

It is voltage feedback, so if you move from the 8 ohm tap to the 4, you get half the feedback unless you also lower the the feedback resistor (R14). That might be an effect you are looking for, but it would be unusual to do that

Hi Guy's, "Noob wants to build an amp" here, so stupid question time, (appology in advance).

So yesterday I got Dave Hunter's "Guitar Amp Handbook" in order to start my tube amp education.

1. Would like to build the amp in DH's book, and according to the OP, all the parts are included in the Weber "Maggie" kit?? Anything else required?

2. I believe that the chasis would have to be modded for a second power tube, correct?

3. Would the Weber Lauren, or the 5F2a kit be more appropriate for this build?

I have an old SS Peavey Backstage Plus amp that I just don't use anymore and was thinking of converting the present cab and 10" speaker to a DIY tube project to minimize costs for the first attempt. Not sure what speaker is in it, but would'nt be opposed to upgrading it. Would a 10" speaker be too small? Any suggestions on the feasibility of doing this?

Thanks to all and sorry for reviving an old thread. I am very enthused about getting into amp building and don't mind 'doing my homework'. I know there is alot of quality experience and know-how on this Forum, so chances are you'll be hearing from me often!

Thanks in advance for any and all advice or suggestions!

Pete

Check over in the Weber Forum ((link removed)) in the Weber Kits and Parts section. At least two people have already built this kit, and they can probably tell you exactly what you need to know.
