Was this a custom job done by Fender or did he have someone else do that. One of the coolest telecasters ever!

Ibelieve Waylon had something like 9 of those leather covered guitars.

There was one recently listed for sale on ebay. It was kinda cheap too if I remember rightly. Around $2k. I have seen the leather wraps duplicated but it's kinda hard to copy the W inlay on the fretboard so I think it was legit. I think it might have been made in mexico though which surprised me.

I wouldn't mind just being able to get one that's painted and finished to duplicate it (quality job of course) I've always loved the look of that guitar.

According to an old article I read years ago, a prisoner made the leather cover and gave it to Waylon as a gift. Waylon did quite a few prison concerts.

After it became his trademark, I'm sure Waylon had other covers made, at least a spare or two. Possibly the same guy who made the original made the others?

One thing I didn't like about the Custom Shop versions was the tooling was as extensive on them as on the real cover.

Those leather guitar jackets were a thing back in the 1950s to early 60s. Buddy Holly made one for his Gibson J-45, Elvis had one on a Martin, Joe Maphis had them, and lots and lots of Fenders sported them, as did some big archtops. They were both ornamental and practical, as they did protect the guitar. Of course on the acoustics, they also killed some of the tone, but who ever came to hear to Elvis play the guitar anyway?

Waylon, though, was a good instrumentalist.
    regards,

I got to speak with Waylon when The Highway Men came to Perth in 1995 and I asked him about the leather cover and how many did he have. He told me only the one but it only takes a couple of minutes to change it to another Tele. He then autographed my custom built tele in my Avatar.. S

While chatting to him I could see he was very tired so I said :- "Thanks Waylon, its great to meet you at last after years of buying your albums but you look knackered mate so I'll let you go." We shook hands and he said "Thank you sir, that long flight has really tuckered me out."
I learned later he had not long had bypass surgery.. S

I worked with Waylon quite a bit. He always made time for fans. Thanks for sharing that story.
