A few less-played Kiss cuts that defy the cheese:

King of the Night Time World and Dr Love were perfect for radio at the time.
Rock Bottom has a 2 minute acoustic instrumental intro (1974)
Hard Luck Woman is straight up country
She and 100,000 Years have space, texture, good lines and solos, and rock
and all the guitar work and harmonies on the first albums are pretty good.

I imagine, they started out with a formula of competency plus gimmick, and learned the gimmick generated more near term sales. Plus, I think those first LPs reveal they were into the band, each other, making music.

    HAHA all the KISS haters.
They were rock GODS back in the day- and they created a legacy.
Presentation and showmanship is a big part of appeal

Well, I always liked them. Thought (and still think) they are really talented across the board (singing, songwriting, performing, showmanship, organizational, marketing, etc.).

Of course, I was around 10 years old when I first heard them AND I am now an engineer.

So...maybe I'm proof of the nerdy-12-year-old theory! LOL!

In sunday school the teacher told us Gene Simmons had a cow's tongue sewed on his own, and that the band name stood for Knights In Satan's Service
If that's not great press, I don't know what is

Initially, I dismissed KISS as a cartoon with live actors. I have never owned any of their recordings, and don't expect to. As I got (much) older, I began to somewhat appreciate them. Not for the musical or songwriting proficiency, neither are really there. But as a pop culture phenomenon. For good, or bad, Nothing really like them before or since.

I remember that, heh. I remember they were THE rage in middle school, then like a switch, they were out, badge of shame, which is usually a point of no return, but they did come back. And came back...heh.

I've just read the beginnings of this thread, but from my observation it was 12 yo girls that were digging on KISS.

The only genuine musical embarrassment in my personal history is that I spent money on Kiss records in my youth and considered myself a fan for about 4–6 months. Fortunately, Queen, prog, and early new wave won out.

I’m 66 now, and I have never found anything about them i particularly liked, their music or anything else.

While it does seem like somewhat of a generational thing to like (or have liked) them, I have a friend who is my same age, loves Telecasters and has played mostly country, classic rock and oldies in a bar band most of his life; and he seems to! But while I came to appreciate alternative rock like REM, he didn’t seem to like it as much. And I never really caught on to a lot of newer country (more older country, folk and bluegrass for my tastes); but he likes it more than me.

And incidentally, I was young when the Beatles became popular, and I initially didn’t like them. I guess I was a little put off because of the hype in the early days with young girls (around my age, so I was probably a little jealous!) going crazy over them. I later learned to appreciate their music.

If you like Kiss, peace! There seems to always be a place among a younger generation for something in culture that folks even just a few years older don’t at least initially appreciate.

We must've went to the same Sunday school. Let me guess... was the band name W.A.S.P. and acronym for "We Are Satan's People"?

(It didn't [or did?] help them that they actually had the punctuation between the letters in their name.)

When I was in elementary school, I thought KISS was the coolest thing ever. By the time middle school hit, I had pretty much moved on.
I still enjoy listening to them from time to time, but for me, they're like most punk rock - best in small doses. Just my opinion.

That was an attempt at writing a Rod Stewart (who was huge at the time) song
When you think about it- they completely nailed it

Ha, yeah, the fact that even some 40-odd years after their glory days, the haters still get their knickers all twisted up about them says a lot.

If it all ended at Love Gun, I’d have respect. But it morphed into **** Disco, the worst Hair Metal, coffins, credit cards, plush toys, and a sea of tacky kitsch.
